Korea Suicide Analysis

South Korea is one of the fast-growing countries yet has the highest suicide rate in the world. According to OECD Statistics, 25.6 people commit suicide per 100,000 people (OECD, 2018). In other words, 36 people per day, 13,092 people per year; much higher than the OECD average of 11.6.

Hence, our group would like to analyze multiple data sets to discover the cause, reason, gender, status and age of different suicide rate and understand the underlying social issue of South Korea.

Singapore Real Estate Index 2019

The Housing Development Board (HDB) is the primary source of information for all things related to housing estates in Singapore. However, the team identifies that there is a lack of context in the understanding of how the Singapore population influences the price of resale and rental in Singapore. Hence, the team would like to identify trends that would highlight the fluctuations in price and present a visual representation of the relevant data that is publicly available.

Visualising Global Happiness and its Contributing Factors

Traditionally, a country’s well-being has been measured on economic variables like GDP or unemployment rate. However, no institution, nation or group of people can really be properly understood without also factoring in a number of other elements. One of these key elements is happiness. What contributes to a country’s happiness? Why are some countries happier than others? Are there any trends or patterns we can discern from the available data? With reference to the World Happiness Report, we attempt to visualize the factors that contribute to a country’s happiness on a global scale.

EC Inspector

Executive Condominium (EC) is a special type of public housing in Singapore, which is similar to private condominiums in terms of facilities and amenities. Introduced in Q2 1996, it was meant to cater to the  needs of the middle income home buyers; especially young graduates and professionals who can  afford more than a HDB flat but find private property to be out of their reach. For direct purchases from a developer, there is a minimum occupancy period of five years, only after which the EC can be resold or rented for whole.
In this project, we hope to find out the real value and status change of EC in Singapore since 1996 considering economic factors such as inflation rate through our visualization.

Crime Scream

There has been a lack of platform to visualize the local area security in respect to the police forces and location of crime over time. Currently, with the police budgets being cut and number of officers decreasing, it is crucial to show the areas with lack of security and an attempt to lower crime rates in these crime hotspots in London.

This includes letting citizens and the police force to know which areas are more prone to crimes happening, let citizens be aware of the type of crimes that are happening in which areas of singapore such as the neighbourhoods and allow the Police department to analyze the security and increase security such as increasing patrol/security in that area.

Visualization of IFC Trade Area and Performance

International Food Chain (IFC) is a leading brand in its sector, with over 18000 outlets worldwide and an ever-growing presence in the global market. In Taiwan alone, IFC has over 240 branches and are constantly expanding.

However, as the franchise grows bigger, so does its challenges. One of the challenges involves the lack of a tool to efficiently compare the performance of each chain to one another.

Leveraging on this fact, our group aims to build a dashboard for IFC that allows for visualization and modelling. We hope to track the performance of each chain in relation to Point-Of-Interests surrounding each chain, uncovering and comprehending phenomena, with the aid of spatial data.

Visualising Macao's Tourism Industry

Macao’s tourism industry has always been one of the most important industries driving economic progress, with visitor arrivals in Macao reporting around 32 million visitors in 2017. Another key aspect of tourism in Macao is its gaming industry. The most densely populated region in the world heavily relies on the popularity of being a gambling destination. 40% of Macao’s GDP comes from the gaming industry and more than 70% of tax revenues are collected from casinos. Despite the rapid growth, the Macao SAR Government has the vision to build it into a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure in the next 15 years. Hence, one of the key questions while analyzing Macao’s tourism statistics would be how the Government of Macao could uncover and utilise trends and patterns to further boost their economy by optimising marketing campaigns and imports.

Visualisation of Singapore's climate

Singapore's weather and climate service provider, Meteorological Service Singapore, is a division under National Environmental Agency which provides reliable climate information based on the data that they collect. The firm also works on researching and predicting accurate weather forecasts in Singapore. Their website currently has numerous visualisations that make use of historical temperature and rain data but some of these visualisations can be further improved so as to increase the ease and deepen the understanding for any users.

Visualising Crimes Against Women in India

According to the Thomson Reuters Foundation Annual Poll, India is ranked as the world’s most dangerous country for women. This is not surprising, as India has had a long-standing history of violence against women, which is deeply rooted in certain cultural practices such as female infanticide and acid attacks.

Even with the increasing public outcry regarding such discrimination and the enactment of laws protecting women, the number of crimes committed against women is increasing steadily over the years.

Hence, our project aims to look into the trends of crimes against women in India at various geographic levels, and analyse the effects of various socioeconomic factors on the rate of crime against women to gain a better understanding of this issue.

Visualising Global Terrororism Acts

Threats of terrorism are still relevant in today's context as many countries are still taking steps in alleviating the threat of terrorism. However, we believe that more actions can be done by analysing past terrorist activities in order to gain insights to place actions quickly in responding to the worst case scenario. Hence, we are interested to find out and understand more information about terrorism patterns (eg: frequency, rate, spread) and how development status (i.e. GNI per capita) has a correlation with terrorism occurred in those particular countries.

Visualising HDB Price

Did you know that 82% of Singaporeans actually lives in HDB flats? Everyone wants to own their dream house! Our group members are all currently at the age where friends talk about housing prices in the hope of securing their dream house soon. For young adults who are looking to start their own family, it is always a huge financial commitment to buy a new house. Hence, this make resale houses a considerable worthwhile choice to look towards.

Many people are always worried about not getting the best price for their dream house and there are just too much information all over the internet which take hours to read up on. To make it easier for resale flat buyers, our team aims to come out with visualization that best represent the current resale flat industry, allowing people to understand the market better. We hope that through these visualizations, potential HDB resale flat buyers are able to better analyse and compare the costs of owning a flat across different towns, prioritize what is important to them before deciding on their dream home.

HDBViz

HDBViz

Our team has identified a lack of information on the HDB for homebuyers who wants to understand and make analysis on which HDB to buy. With the increasing demand for housing, there is a need for homeowners to have a better understanding over the flats they are purchasing. Hence, there is a need to analyze the resale prices and transaction volume of the flats.

Sunny Singapore

What does the Jewel of Southeast Asia actually look like?

When Crazy Rich Asians topped the global box-office, it was a cultural moment that put Singapore on the map as a destination for lavish lifestyles and towering skyscrapers. With these ostentatious displays of wealth littered all over Singapore, even we forget sometimes that this image of prosperity is much further from the truth for many citizens.

Through our project, we seek to shed a different light on Singapore by uncovering various echelons of society through our Sunny Singapore story.

Visualizing Indonesia's Trade

The Ministry of Trade (Kementrian Perdagangan Republik Indonesia) and Central Agency of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik) of Indonesia has been providing comprehensive Indonesia’s trading data. However, the information is mostly displayed in a table format. Hence, it is challenging to derive analysis and insights. Our team aim to address the lack of a comprehensive visualization platform to show the impact of export and import on Indonesia's trade of balance. Furthermore, through this platform, users can essentially identify areas of deficit and improvement on the available data that Indonesia can work on.
