DreamWorks: Proposal
The Housing Development Board (HDB) is the primary source of information for all things related to housing estates in Singapore. However, the team identifies that there is a lack of context in the understanding of how the Singapore population influences the price of resale and rental in Singapore. Hence, the team would like to identify trends that would highlight the fluctuations in price and present a visual representation of the relevant data that is publicly available.
Sources | Data name | Purpose |
---|---|---|
Data.gov.sg | Planning Zone & Subzone | Extract data to form the Singapore Map for data association. |
Data.gov.sg | Singapore Population Living in HDB Flats | Extract data to analyze Singapore population currently residing in HDB flats by planning zones. |
Data.gov.sg | Median Rent by Town & Flat type | Extract data to analyze median rent rate by town and flat type. |
Data.gov.sg | Median Resale Price for Registered Application by Town & Flat type | Extract data to analyze median resale price by town and flat type. |
Singstat | Geographic Distribution of Singapore | Extract data to analyze Singapore population for each dwelling type within Singapore's 2014 Planning Zones |
1. Housing Development Board - Map Service HDB Map Service
The map service provides instant access to understand various property-related information such as facilities in the vicinity, resale price, and rental rate. However, the map is useful only for searching for specific buildings in a location but not as a platform for storytelling and visualization.
2. Datadriven.sg hackathon - a look at Singapore's property prices
Tableau Public
The visualization is created by HX Chua for the hackathon as indicated above on Oct 22, 2016. The visualization endeavors to create an analysis tool to identify patterns and trends for the rise and fall of resale price and rental rates in Singapore property based on flat type. The project gathered data from Data.gov.sg and PropertyGuru.com.
3. Visualization of Population in Singapore
Singapore City Population by Planning Area
The visualization provides an overview of the resident population in the urban planning areas and subzones in Singapore according to census results and latest official estimates. It serves well to be used as a reference to showcase the density of the population in each Singapore's Planning Area and Subzones. The visualization also incorporates a table to showcase the exact value for the population that resides in a given location.
Potential Challenges | Issues | Mitigation |
---|---|---|
1. Lack of Domain Knowledge | Singapore real estate is a challenging topic to cover, given that there are alot of external factors that affect a property's value. | Learn more from HDB and understand trends from exsisting data sources. |
2. Data Constraints | There are few access to datasets where it is comprehensive enough to cover the real estate industry in Singapore. | Make do with what we can find from Singapore's exsisting data sources such as Data.gov and Sing Stat. |
3. Experience with R Programming | Our members are new to R programming and it will take some time to fully understand the new programming language. | Anticipate risks when using R packages, and rely on Prof Kam's notes and stack overflow for directions. |
