6.6: Visualization of Graphics on Layout |
6.6: Visualization of Graphics on Layout
With the selection of graphics, we will then attempt to input the graphics onto the layout, customized for each of the key types of stakeholder. Then, we will seek to identify major and minor improvements from here, before finalizing our dashboard - and create a story based on it.
6.6.4: Objective 2 - With Reference to Research Paper
A recap of the objective of this version as below;
- To enable all the 3 key stakeholders to validate if the research conducted are conclusive or there might be further insights and/or exceptions to the conclusion by the research paper so as to help;
- Wikimedia Foundation: understanding the factors that influence users to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool will help them to identify the area(s) to focus their improvement on, so as to convert more people into users and/or registered users.
- IT Manager of IT Department: Understanding the factors that influence users to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool will help to identify how to facilitate and allocate resources if the management decided to implement Wikipedia as a teaching tool in the school.
- Teaching Staffs: to understand why other teaching staffs are keen to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool
6.6.4.1: Selection of Variables
The variables selected must be the same as that in the research paper, therefore;
- Only respondents from UOC are selected.
- Indicators will not be used, but categories will be used. Categories chosen are the same as that used in the research paper.
- Hypothesis code (and description) are linked to the categories and the relationship between both variables as mapped as accordingly to the research paper. (refers to 5.5.6: Research Paper's Hypothesis for more details.
This will help to have this analysis aligned with that used in the research paper. In addition, other variables selected (so as to faciliate further analysis) are;
- Teaching Profile : Domain
- Personal Profile : Gender and Age Group
As these variables are the primary / main variables that give a good overview of the respondent's teaching & personal profile.
6.6.4.2: Initial Layout - with Selected Variables
An image of the initial dashboard for research paper analysis as below;
This is also available in Link to Objective 2 #Research Paper Dashboard
6.6.4.3: Area of Improvement
A major mistake made is to assume that the analysis for this objective will be similar to that of objective #1. Upon closer examination, it was noticed that to meet the objective of this analysis; we need to realize that
1.In the research paper, a statistical approach is used to validate the hypothesis of the categories.
- Therefore, when statistics approaches identify that the hypothesis is not rejected, it means that the factors have an influence on each other.
2.Using visual analytics, we need to identify how similar, and how different these results are, when placed together.
- With this, we can then can compare what we see visually if it were similar to that from the results of the statistics approach.
- For instance, if the statistical results are precise, then; we should be seeing more "similarity" than "different" results on our visual graph.
- The divergent graph, while able to display the results of online survey well, but unable to meet our objective.
3.Comparison with each of the 9 hypothesis (per research paper) is necessary.
- Therefore; a filter to select the hypothesis & display the hypothesis description - are necessary on the dashboard.
4.We should not SUM or AVERAGE the survey results based on the categories
- because they are ordinal data, and summing or averaging the number does not make sense.
- Hence, we need to find a method to display all the respondent's responses, and compare accordingly.
Other areas of improvements are highlighted as per the diagram below;
6.6.4.4: Final Version for #Version 4: The Wikimedia Foundation
Similar to Version #3, this version of dashboard was designed after the completion of Version #1 & #2, therefore; unlike Version#1: Teaching Staff, and Version#2: IT Manager where much improvement areas are identified - especially in the area of "Teaching Profile" and "Personal Profile".
The unique improvement is;
- Replacing the Divergent chart with a Heatmap. This heatmap is able to;
- Display all the respondents' responses in a vertical line, base on the questions (horizontal).
6.6.4.4.1:Objective of the Heat Map
1. To show that there are exceptions to the statistical hypothesis as per the research paper.
- For instance, if the hypothesis is truly reflective of the situation, then; visual graph should show that the responses are identical in polarity.
- For example, using H1 as an example - Hypothesis 1 of "User behavior of Wikipedia by Teacher is determined by their behavioral intention of use" is not rejected statistically, and the research paper highlight that "behavioral intention" and "user behavior" has an impact on each other.
- If this holds true, then; visually we should be able to see the responses from the questions from both categories are consistent with the same polarity of either being positive (Agree & Strong Agree) or negative (Disagree & Strongly Disagree).
- Thus, IDs that do not show this consistency; are showing signs that this hypothesis does not hold 100% true.
2. Using color as a visual aid to help us to meet our objective, as below;
- With Orange to represent "Strongly Disagree" & "Disagree",
- With Blue to represent "Strongly Agree" and "Agree",
- With Grey to represent "Neutral", and "unknown".
3. Connect the Heatmap with "Teaching Profile" & "Personal Profile", so that
- we can see the main profile of the respondents that contributes to the differences or similarity, as compared to the hypothesis.
