6.1 Challenges and Learning Lessons

This assignment has provided many opportunities to learn and challenges to overcome. Below is a brief review of the challenges met and lessons learnt:

Business and Data Challenges

  1. Selection of financial ratios - There are many financial ratios out there for use. It is important to research and have a baseline what can adequately cover most concerns of stakeholders
  2. Many companies do not have a complete set of indicators across the years. A decision was made to just show what is available rather than filtering away companies without a complete set of indicators
  3. The original data set by itself does not provide enough context on the meaning of the indicators, nor the company names. Additional research was done to discover the required information via a Taxonomy file.
  4. Data filtering via selecting only needed indicators is necessary to manage the file sizes for Tableau to read in the file

Technical Challenges

  1. Initial exploration was performed using D3 for Radar charts. Effort to set up includes setting up a web server locally (using AMPPS - http://www.ampps.com/) to run D3 visualizations accessing external data files. Additionally, it was my first time working on GitHub, and I needed to overcome challenges referencing D3.js/Angular.js frameworks that needs to be over HTTPS
  2. A decision was made in the end to stop work on D3 (due to time constraints on technical challenges and poor suitability of Radar charts for displaying time series), and go back to Tableau with its built-in support of Trellis charts.

6.2 Future Works

Some future works that can be explored with the dataset includes:

  1. To explore the use of augmenting additional information to existing dashboards for stakeholders. This includes Company News and current stock data via RSS feeds
  2. To explore other financial ratios to build a bigger repository of ratios for potential use
  3. Have pre-built thematic analysis, for example explore more information about different sectors/industries and the ratios more important for each industry
