Task 3: Complex Issue

In this page, we will continue our discussion on air pollution in Sophia. As we have discuss previously, the air pollution was a complex issue, and not as simple as temperature changes. Now we will try to discuss other factor that might cause the air pollution to increase.

Metrology

Metrology Data

Figure 1 (Top) show a relationship between parameter in meteorology data (temperature, dew point temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, surface pressure, precipitation amount, and visibility). From these data, we could observe that only temperature and dew point temperature that has strong relationship with air pollution concentration. This relationship has been observed in previous discussion (Task 2). For wind speed data, it dint show any strong relationship with air pollution, which may be due to insufficient data on direction. Wind speed suppose to be a vector data, where direction of the wind will play a dominant effect to the city.

Topology

Topology

Figure 2 (Top) show a overlay of elevation to Sophia's map. as we can see the bottom left side of the city was actually a mountain. This make Sophia located near a valley. This location will be bad in terms of air pollution as the wind from Europe will bring additional air pollutant and these particle have harder time to left Sophia due to its location.
This mountain on the southern part of the city may also explain why the increase in air pollutant is coming from northern side (previous discussion on Task 2). As incoming wind from west and south are being blocked by the mountain. This may also indicate that the air pollution in Sophia may not be produced in Sophia alone. Further data are required to explore this possibility.
