Overview

According to reports, Sofia City is one of highest polluted city in Europe, with high levels of particulate matter, PM10 and PM2.5. These pollutants are dangerous as they are very fine particles which are inhalable and posed serious health issues with prolonged exposure.

Sofia was one of the top producers of energy in Eastern Europe and with its unique location of being in a valley, there is a need to understand if situation and seriousness of the situation and what are the probable causes of pollution.

Common Air Quality Index is used in this analysis and it follows the table below

Insights

Both citizen data and official data indicates that pollution was usually bad in winter months and a probable reason is that more energy needs to be generated for heating. In addition, area near geothermal plant were more likely to be polluted.
