EVALUATION

A number of applications and graphs were used in this assignment. Below are some evaluations on my hands-on for them:

  • Tableau - No doubt Tableau is a powerful visualisation tool with good online support, it was hard trying to design a network graph using Tableau. The online advice and templates were rather difficult to understand, and they were not as aesthetic compared to other network graph applications. Nevertheless, it would be nice if a network graph can be built using Tableau, so that it can incorporated into an interactive Dashboard to show movement data at the same time.

  • JMP - This is a must-have for data processing and preview. In fact, the brushing technique is able to shed some light on the patterns. JMP is also more reliable in handling volume data, at least my computer did not crash as many times as when I applied the data into Gephi.

  • Gephi - The merits of Gephi is slowly revealing as we do more hands-on. It is actually quite good for visualising a network graph, especially when we can manipulate the size and colour of nodes/edges, and incorporate a timeline. There is also some support in the online Gephi community, but it is quite hard to understand their technical jargon. I also felt that the light blue canvass in the sigma.js webpage makes it quite hard for the nodes and edges to stand out. And Gephi is also not able to handle high volumes.

  • Power BI - This is my first time trying out Power BI. It seemed to have good potential in developing beautiful visualisations, and is quite easy to use. Take the Sankey Diagram for example, we just need to drag and drop the correct values into the correct fields. We can use trial and error for this. However, for the same Sankay Diagram, the drawback is that we are not able to apply colour to the edges.

  • Camtasia - This is included into the evaluation because it was used in the assignment. Just wanted to highlight that it is easy to use and good. However its evaluation licence is ending soon - probably may consider purchasing a licence proper.
