Working on Pro-cept for the past 5 months has made me realize how important it is to set a solid foundation for the project. As the Project Manager, it is warranted that my job scope includes managing the team’s schedule, balancing the members’ workload, ensuring their welfare is taken care of and keeping the team focused.

However, one key takeaway that I have learnt from this project is the importance of aligning members’ expectations of the team and the project. As Pro-cept is a self-initiated project, we do not have requirements to adhere nor sponsors to give us a direction to work in. Hence, as the PM, I have to be firm in setting the expectations for the team so that members can work with a common goal in mind.

Also, other than managing my personal commitments, I have learnt to understand my team members’ commitments better in order to allocate tasks to each member more efficiently.

Though working on Pro-cept has not exactly been a perfectly smooth-sailing experience, I am thankful for my team members who have been very helpful to me and have motivated me to work harder in my contributions to the team.

As a relatively less strong coder, I take a longer time and larger amount of effort to comprehend many theories and technologies that are used in Pro-cept. However, my team members are patient in helping me achieve a complete understanding of the project. This made me realized that ensuring common understanding of the details of the project amongst members is key to ensure the progress of the team.

Though I am less strong in coding, I make efforts to help the members in other ways like linguistic and designing skills. I am confident that the team will be able to make this project a success.

As the lead developer of Pro-cept, I faced many unexpected challenges during the course of the project. Firstly, the implementation of the Google API proved to be more challenging than I expected. The time that was scheduled to complete the implementation was too short and the team had to extend one of the iterations in order to complete the implementation. This taught me that it is good to always plan a buffer, as your expectations may not be accurate.

Also, as the schedule of Pro-cept is relatively condensed, I have learnt that time is critical when it comes to working on Pro-cept. With other projects, I may be able to get away with last minute work but definitely not with Pro-cept.

5 months into this project, I have learnt a few lessons that will be useful in future projects. Structuring of the project at the initial stages is crucial as the structure defines the requirements and aims that the members can align to.

As our structure was not very clear in the beginning, our team had to constantly edit our project to align our expectations. For example, we were not sure about the structure of our user interface, the fields required for the interface. This resulted in poor usability of our project initially.

Through several tests that we have conducted, we have remedied this problem.

Through this project, I managed to pick up many useful hard skills because of the new technologies that our team used for Pro-cept. Due to some problems that we encountered along the way, I have also learned soft skills such as overcoming problems as a group and being adaptable. As our project is a self-initiated project, our requirements are set by our team and hence sometimes we have to be adaptable as what we want may not be what our users will need.
