For me, joining TSM allows me to embark on a journey of deeper understanding and exploration of the entrepreneurial spirit beyond our shores. I wish to increase my global outlook via a better understanding of South Korea and the driving force of their tech industry. And of course TSM is the best chance to go beyond classroom learning and really have a good look at the real world through visits to the different companies. That is really experiential learning at its finest and I really hope this would broaden my perspectives if I am to start up a company one day :)

Pre- Trip

Week 1 - The start of TSM!

The whole atmosphere was all fun and play, I wondered if I was in the right class to stay. Prof Ben gave an introduction of the course, equipping us technopreneurs before we went out full force!

I'm Nicholas the video-maker, a colossal task for this new editor. Learning and doing my best, life will take care of the rest.

And so begins the search for startups under the sun, we all wish we had a company that's interesting and fun. My eyes were fixated on Tokyo Otaku Mode, anime, manga, cosplay and the wonderful childhood memories that we strode!

  • Why South Korea?

Annyoung!!! This would be my first time to South Korea and I think it would be a dream come true to actually travel there. From their vibrant gaming culture (all the hyperactive and expressive game commentators) to their entertainment industry (KPOP MVs, drama and variety shows), I've seen and experienced it all on my computer and TV only (the sad truth) and it would definitely be awesome to go South Korea in person! I think this TSM would be a good experience in every aspect, from learning to having fun, in a place that I've always been so fascinated about!

During Trip

  • What types of internship opportunities interest you?

I think any kind of internship opportunities would interest me but what would interest me more is getting an internship at a gaming company because I have a passion for gaming and it will be interesting to work in this industry, especially since gaming is like a major social activity in South Korea. Business Analyst and IT consulting-related internships would be very relevant as well.

  • Any ideal firms (based in South Korea) that you wish to join?

Gaming firms in general. I like Softnyx in particular since it has so produced so many games that have really nice game graphics and gameplay. Really enjoyed the good ole days of playing gunbound with friends :) NCSoft is also another ideal choice, with so many great titles under it like Guild Wars 2 and the legendary Lineage series.

Post Trip

  • What types of business interest you?
  1. Gaming
  2. Technological
  3. Social Media
  4. Entertainment
  • What plan do you have in starting a business?

Some of my badminton teammates and I are in the midst of starting a business that involves video-recording services for major badminton tournaments to facilitate scouting of talents by sponsors as well as after matches competition analysis.

Blog/ Journal

I am currently working in a start-up with some of my FYP IS480 mates to develop a new advertising platform called Sqkii. My team consists of Eleazar Lim, Janan Tan, Denise Wong, Rafael Loh and Agurz. The idea is to promote advertising as a content rather than a sideline. This is an exciting journey of exploring uncharted territories, but things are looking good as we have gotten a patent for this and have 100% acceptance from 20 over companies that are interested to invest in us.
