Why TSM South Korea?

Profile Pic

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

It will be my first time travelling to South Korea!!

Currently it is one of the Asia's Fastest Changing City. In the midst of their rapid modernization and expansion, Seoul is moving onto the world's stage of as one of Asia's most vibrant and exciting cities. I hope to gain more exposure and broaden my knowledge on their business work.

Through this overseas study mission, I can immerse into the Korea culture they possesses a rich history spanning thousands of years. I believe in learning outside of classroom where I can apply my knowledge and experience with this study mission.

  • Why pick South Korea?

There are several areas which fascinates me, among which are

South Korea's main economy drivers includes electronics, telecommunications and auto production. Furthermore, South Korea's largest corporations namely Hyundai, Kia, LG and Samsung have made significant breakthroughs in gaining market shares internationally. I would like to gain insights on the essentials and the components in which South Korean companies do differently in order to compete head to head with western brands and to learn from the best.

Places of interest - Yeojwa Stream (경상남도 진해 여좌천 벚꽃길), Suncheon Bay (순천만), Hyeopjae Beach, Jeju Island (제주도 협재 해수욕장), Korean DMZ (demilitarized zone)

Internship Opportunites

  • What types of internship opportunities interest you?
  • Any ideal firms (based in South Korea) that you wish to join?

PastExperiences

  • Describe your past experience (entrepreneurship, or works in start ups etc)

Entrepreneurship
Currently, I do not have any prior experience in entrepreneurship. However, it has always been my aspiration to set up and run my own business.
It is necessary to have an idea which transforms into a sound business model and essentially a key foundation to run a business. In addition, there are many other key components which contributes to the success of running a business, such as market point of entry, market adaptability, sales and marketing, idea innovation and sourcing of funds.

It would be great to have first hand experience to gain insights from the Koreans on the methodologies and frameworks that they use to run their businesses.

Prior joining SMU, I took part in the Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition and managed to clinch a spot in the top 20. It was a great and fulfilling experience to be able to pitch the business idea - Grapevine to venture capitalist and top management executives. 2 key takeaways from it was that it boils back down to 2 main factors. Firstly, the ability to sell - is there a market for it? Secondly, the sustainability - rate of return of investment.

Experiences
My strengths lies in project and events management. I have managed projects of various scales ranging from school events to community level, attracting a participation strength over 3000. I am glad to spearhead and gained the support from my peers to lead school & community events in my alma mater - Republic Polytechnic namely Clean and Green Week, Open House, PBL International Symposium, Prime Minister Visit, President Visit. I continued my passion in SMU by organising events such as SMU 10th Anniversary Photo Inspiration, InnovateIT 12, APEX Global Business Challenge 11 & 12, StarringSMU (Largest Community Service Society in SMU), SIS Metamorphosis Camp.

I am outgoing and always look forward in meeting and interacting with people. I always seek to challenge myself to take on different roles and to explore areas that is beyond my comfort zone, ie Floorball Goalie, Master of Ceremony (Emcee), Parade Commander, Guard of Honor (GOH), Public Announcement (PA) Crew, VVIPs Ambassador, Commander's Secretary, Interior Designer.

“One piece of log creates a small fire, adequate to warm you up, add just a few more pieces to blast an immense bonfire, large enough to warm up your entire circle of friends; needless to say that individuality counts but team work dynamites.”
