About Wayra

Wayra, which means 'wind' in Quechua, was born with the aim of becoming an accelerator for the development of future Silicon Valleys in the countries where Telefónica is present. Created in Latin America in April 2011, Wayra aspires to identify ideas with the greatest potential in ICT and to boost their development, providing them with the technology, mentoring and financing they need. Entrepreneurs are invited to submit their projects to Wayra which then selects a number to take forward. Successful project are provided with financing (in exchange for a 10% share), access to Telefónica resources (including management and technical expertise) and a place to work. Wayra is currently present in nine countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela), and has plans to expand further in Europe during 2012, launching in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Czech Republic.

Founding Team

  • Tanja Kufner (Academy Director): Responsible for Strategy & Business Development Executive with broad experinece in Mobile and Internet Technologies, VC Investing and Business Building.
  • Christine Sturm (Deputy Academy Director): Creative Strategist with experience in Strategy, New Business Development, Innovation, Social Media & Startup Acceleration Programmes.

Recent Development

  • August 2013: 3 new startups have been chosen among many applicants. One of it is Naymit.
  • June 2013: Wayra Munich’s first Investor Demo Day

Creating Values

Leveraging on current network of startups, network and management expertise, Wayra can increase its involvement with the campus through in Asia as its Asian entry strategy to further enhance its network effect and reach out to more markets.

Here, the concept of network effect comes into play. The more companies that joins Wayra and succeed, the better its reputation and this in turn affects the amount of resources it gets: making Wayra bigger and better than it already was.
