Why TSM?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

I am eager to take advantage of this opportunity to help broaden my horizons, both academically and culturally.

Firstly, I believe that this program will allow me to gain valuable exposure to different technologies and innovations and how this is applied to the startup scene in Tokyo. This will be especially interesting to me as I am a tech enthusiast and am also interested in startup companies. Hence I would like to firsthand see how tech is used in the startup scene in Tokyo.

Moreover, I am also excited about the idea of experiencing and diving into the Japanese startup culture. I believe that the culture there is significantly different from Singapore's and by getting firsthand experience, I will be able to get better insights and learn a lot from this study trip. By being exposed to different cultures, languages and ways of thinking, I aim to become a more well-rounded individual and a better global citizen through this study trip.

Lastly, I am confident that not only can I benefit from this, I am confident that I can contribute to this study trip as well. Not only am I an avid enthusiast in travelling, I am also a great planner. Hence I believe that I will be able to contribute well to the planning team. I also am interested in several of the Japanese companies listed, such as Sega and Suntory Distillery as they are familiar names and brands that I firsthand am familiar with and am interested to visit to see how the working culture is like there.

  • Where would you like to visit?

Tokyo: - Sega (Japanese multinational video game and entertainment company): Sega was very popular especially during my childhood and I would like to visit the company - Suntory Distillery (Japanese whiskey distillery): I want to see how such a typically traditional company incorporates technology into their business

Starting a business

  • What types of business interest you?

I am interested in the Food and Beverage Industry. Coming from a tech background, I am interested in thinking of new ways on how technology can be integrated in the Food and Beverage Industry which is commonly seen as a traditional industry. Generally, I am interested in seeing how businesses work. I like to see the whole business process. In large companies it may be quite difficult to see as processes can be longer and may require multiple levels of approvals. However in smaller startups, processes are much faster as companies are much smaller and changes can be made quicker.

  • What plans do you have in starting a business?

In the past I did attempt to start a small scale drink provider service to help connect suppliers to consumers, allowing suppliers to skip the middleman and sell direct to consumers. However due to covid I stopped this service but in the future hope to be able to start again.

Past Experiences

Startup Experience:

  • UncappedSG: A small scale direct business to consumer drink delivery service which aims to skip the middleman to lower costs. It was also used as a way for alcohol suppliers to sell soon-to-expire stocks to reduce wastage and at the same time allow consumers to purchase goods at lower prices. Started in 2019 but stopped in 2020 due to covid.
