Why Virtual TSM?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

This particular rendition of TSM was particularly interesting to me as students have the opportunity to visit Silicon Valley. With Silicon Valley being a haven for start-ups while serving as home to some of the largest technology companies in the world such as Apple, Alphabet and Cisco, I want to like to understand and experience why such a unique ecosystem is able to co-exist and flourish. At the same time, I would like to learn from the experiences of successful start-ups and find out what their journey has been and how they have managed to do it. Culturally, I would like to engage and meet new people there, understanding why their views and attitudes towards start-up culture and entrepreneurship are vastly different from that of Asian society and hopefully come back with new perspectives. Lastly, as Silicon Valley is often one of the earliest adopters of new technologies, I would like to learn what are the latest trends or new technologies that are upcoming in Silicon Valley so as to broaden my appreciation for technology.

  • Where would you like to visit?

Silicon Valley: Impossible Foods, Thync, CourseHero, Apple, Meta, Alphabet, Intel, PayPal, Stanford University

Starting a business

  • What types of business interest you?

I am interested in businesses that make a positive impact on society, such as medtech start-ups as well as foodtech start-ups and would like to gain an appreciation as to their motivations for creating these start-ups and how do they use technology to improve society. Additionally, I would love to interact with tech businesses that are aggressively scaling and growing so as to learn about their business strategies and find out what strategies have or have not worked for them. Lastly, I would be interested in gaining an appreciation as to how they plan to chart their company’s strategic direction for success in the near term and longer term.

  • What plans do you have in starting a business?

Currently, I do not have any plans on starting a business as I was always under the impression that it would be too challenging, risky and costly. Additionally, there has always been this fear that my ideas were not ground breaking or impactful enough to take off. However, I hope that through this technopreneurship study mission, I will be able to gain insights and perspectives from innovators in Silicon Valley and learn how they overcome such fears and turn ideas into reality. As a result, I hope to take away new attitudes towards entrepreneurship and innovation and apply them in Singapore in the near future.
