Why Virtual TSM?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

In June 2019, I participated in the Google Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSIx) Program in Singapore. My wonderful experience in this program inspired me to study computer science in university, and I aspired to join a major tech company like Google in future.

However, after joining SMU as a Computer Science student, I am now aware of the entrepreneurship and startup ecosystem in SMU, such as the BIG incubator program. I am intrigued about the prospect of launching an entrepreneurial venture with like-minded peers.

I believe that the TSM would provide a great opportunity for me to learn more about the startups in Seoul, which is a dynamic entrepreneurial hub in Asia. Korea is also a major global player in the creative media industries, as evidence by the success of blockbusters such as the Squid Game. I am interested in the intersection of tech and creative media industries, and there is much to learn from the startups in this space in Seoul.

  • Where would you like to visit?

I understand that there is a vibrant startup scene in Seoul. In particular, I am keen to visit startups working in the intersection of tech and creative media industries such as UI/UX design, digital entertainment, gaming, etc.

Some examples of such startups include:
1. SmartStudy - a leading digital entertainment firm, and creator of the Pinkfong and Monster Super League.
2. Contents First - a leading digital comics firm, and creator of Tappytoon.
3. 4:33 Creative Lab - a leading mobile game development firm.
4. Bagelcode - a leading developer of games for major gaming platforms.
5. CLO Virtual Fashion - a leading developer of 3D garment simulation technology for fashion, film and gaming.

In addition, I am keen to visit Kakao and Naver, which are major companies that have spawned startup ecosystems around them.

Starting a business

  • What types of business interest you?

Since young, I have been interested in creative design, and have been designing and creating things as a hobby. I was the Creative Director of the VJC Photography Society, where I pursued my interest in photography. Thus, I am interested in businesses in the creative design industries such as digital entertainment, gaming, fashion, film, etc. There is huge potential to apply new technologies such as AI to transform these creative design industries and generate significant business value.

  • What plans do you have in starting a business?

I do not have concrete plans to start a business now, but I am keen to explore the possibility to do a startup with some like-minded peers, preferably to develop new technologies and solutions for the creative design industries such as digital entertainment, gaming, fashion, film, etc.
