Why Virtual TSM?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

I have been interested in starting up my own business since I was young and have always derived satisfaction when I come up with creative solutions to improve even the little things in my everyday life. This semester, I have worked with a startup LDR Technology as an SMU-X module. It was a humbling experience being able to learn about the motivations of the creation of a self-guided walking tour called the LocoMole App, and also being able to take on a digital leadership role to further market their app. Currently, I am with Ripplecreate as a curriculum developer where I create content on how to develop mobile applications for young students. The curriculum would then be implemented on their portal for users to do remote learning. This particular stint has fuelled my desire to create value in the edtech industry. Given edtech companies such as Coursera report net losses due to low conversion rate as a free model, I would like to learn more about how edtech startups overcome issues like this. Moreover, edtech startups in Korea are also in a race to expand their boundaries and break into global markets. As such, TSM would be an ideal place for me to observe the operations of various edtech companies and how their services effectively improve the lives of students.

  • Where would you like to visit?

Seoul:

  1. Edtech startups - Classting, Codeit, Sparta, Code:Wings
  2. Internet giants - Kakao, Naver
  3. Schools - SNU, Yonsei
  4. Entertainment - KBS, MBC

Starting a business

  • What types of business interest you?

I am particularly interested in the field of edtech, creating content and resources to provide an individualised learning experience for students. This type of business attracts me since I personally find online platforms convenient and hassle-free when it comes to learning.

  • What plans do you have in starting a business?

I intend to create a centralised platform for users, especially young individuals, to pick up real-world problem solving skills on their own. They can enrol in particular fields of tech that they are interested in and expose themselves to the basics at a young age. The centralised platform will be where they can access their progress and also come out with small projects which they can showcase in future. Furthermore, students nowadays own a personalised learning device, hence they can use this opportunity to equip themselves with tech skills and also find out if programming is for them. l hope that through this TSM, it will ignite the entrepreneurial spirit in me and enable me to take a step towards starting my own business during my penultimate or final year of studies.
