Why Virtual TSM?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

It all started with IDP back in year 2. As I was ploughing through and breaking my brains on ideas for my project – I had a moment of ingenuity. I thought, designs are mostly oriented around those who are gifted with sight - but what about those who are not? To me, I feel that the best design and most meaningful technologies would be those that can be felt and appreciated even by those are unable to see. With this, I formulated an idea of an application which could assist the blind in living their best lives possible by removing hindrances in their daily lives, using technologies such as object detection and language translation. Unfortunately, I came to know that the idea I held such great regard to has been raised in an Korean drama named StartUp - and upon binging all 16 episodes, the vibrancy and innovation of the startup scene, as well as the passion the founders injected into their craft truly moved me. Personally, I believe that having a career is so much more than the slaving away 8 hours in office each day. To me - I want to pursue a path which allows me to devote my time onto meaningful areas and social causes which I am impassioned about. I want to be an entrepreneur. With that, I found a bunch of like-minded friends - Jiaxing, Jing Wei and Sian Ying who holds the same beliefs as me. We wish to embark on the journey of TSM - to gain a deeper understanding of the reality of entrepreneurship, and experience it right in the very land that inspired it all - Korea.

  • Where would you like to visit?

Seoul: Dot Incorporation, Zigbang, Stradvision, Superbin, Samsung Town
Busan: Jagalchi Station
I would love to visit Dot Incorporation in Seoul, which is a startup focusing on improving accessibility for the blind through Braille tactile modules in the smart cities we live in today. On top of that, I wish to visit Jagalchi station in Busan if possible, as it is one of the locations where Dagachi Naranhi, a smartphone app which uses GPS location to provide directional information to the visually impaired, was launched. I read on some newspapers that the kiosks involved offers a Braille touchpad which can transform into a tactile map, and would really like to personally experience the running of this initiative. Some other cool startups I would like to visit includes Zigbang (VR-based housing tour technology), Stradvision (Deep learning autonomous vehicles technology), Superbin (Recycling robotics) and the famous Samsung Town!

Starting a business

  • What types of business interest you?

I am very interested in businesses with a cause to fill in societal gaps through modern technologies, especially those which addresses the needs of the less advantaged. Although technology has improved humanity's living standards enormously, it is undeniable that such progress may increase societal gap as the disadvantaged may not even have the privilege to enjoy such advancements. Thus, I feel strongly for using tech as a force for good, to remove the hindrances faced by this group of people, and assist them in living their best lives possible.

  • What plans do you have in starting a business?

I aim to start a social technological company that focuses on image detection for the visually impaired within the next 5 years. However, I plan to gain more exposure in the corporate world and secure sufficient funds for doing so before I kickstart my entrepreneurship journey with my group of friends!
