Why TSM?

What motivates you to join TSM?

The boom in technology has shown that technology is becoming a necessity instead of a privilege. Its importance is further highlighted by the recent pandemic that kept us all at home, and its presence is becoming as prominent as ever. No doubt, these technologies can be tapped on, and though it might be hard to achieve, such digital transformation would be beneficial to most companies and industries, especially in this ever-changing environment.

As such, I believe that joining TSM helps us to discover the importance of bridging the gap between businesses and technology. Entrepreneurship, together with technology, creates the startup industry that provides new and innovative services for us. Last summer, after interning in a FinTech startup, I managed to see first hand how one works, and I was highly intrigued. With its fast paced and highly hands-on culture, I was able to pick up many new skills while learning more about the industry.

Throughout the world, there are many startups and entrepreneurs, working hard to achieve their dreams, and pushing themselves to discover and create something for the rest of the world. Such innovations not only have the potential to make our lives easier, but also motivates others to do the same. These highly motivated individuals are one-of-a-kind, and I believe that learning from them and their startups would be highly enriching.

Where do you NOT want to travel for TSM?

Anywhere is an opportunity for learning, every city is unique. Even if cross-border travel is not allowed, I believe that there will be much to pick up from in Singapore as well. Our small city has many surprises too!

Starting a business

What types of business interest you?

FinTechs interests me. Having interned in one, I was exposed to the vast finance industry, and I believe that legacy FIs and young, innovative startups would be able to work hand in hand to provide better financial services for all.

What plan do you have in starting a business?

Till now, I haven't had any solid plans for a startup, and I am still exploring my opportunities while picking up as much skills and knowledge as I can through school and internships. Ideally, I plan to explore the financial industry after graduation to understand the industry further, for a FinTech startup that would help address pain points of individuals.

What keeps you ticking?

Having challenges is what motivates me.

As someone who is passionate in sports, I like competition, and having a challenge gives me something to work towards, as overcoming the challenge gives me a sense of satisfaction. The challenge does not have to be something major, such as picking up a new skill or learning how to use a new software, but it can be something as simple as solving a question on an assignment. I believe that most challenges and problems can be solved, and I do not believe in giving up. This is because I do not like to leave things halfway done, no matter how hard it is. The harder the challenge, the more satisfaction there would be after overcoming it.

In addition, we face challenges every day, and it is a common occurrence in our lives. Thus, I believe that the first step in overcoming challenges would be to look at it positively, and see it as a form of motivation, instead of looking at it as something that slows down the learning process. I also feel that challenges are beneficial, as there is always something that we can takeaway from the process of overcoming them, and eventually overcoming it. Overcoming each challenge is like a mini achievement for me, even though it might not be the end goal. It motivates me and drives me to do better, as it gives me something to be proud of.
