I am the one on the left.

Reasons for Participating in Virtual TSM:

Building on Past Experiences and Knowledge

  • For myself, I would like to join this class because it allows me to further my existing knowledge in technology and business innovation. I had the opportunity of working on structuring scenario-planning business strategy frameworks for challenging environments in Singapore, China and Japan, having recently undertaken an NUS Foresight and Innovation Research Position.
  • During my stint of research, I thus got intimately acquainted with the value chain of key national industries (such as pharmaceuticals, ecommerce and air freight) that are presently evolving and adapting to various globalization trends. I feel that this TSM course’s provision of opportunities to correspond and mingle with actual entrepreneurs attracted me as it offers a depth of insight that I as an independent research assistant was both deeply interested yet unable to properly grasp .

Opportunity to Further Examine Key Social Issues

  • Another reason for why I would like to join the class is that this TSM allows me to examine common first world social issues have on a country’s business market environment as a university subject, which is a keen interest of mine. To further this interest in the past, I participated in a pre-university business study mission to Slovakia/Czech Republic to study their youth migration and “brain drain” phenomena, tying in with both local high schools and talent and recruitment companies such as LEAF Organization.
  • More recently, I also participated in both an NUS Legal Research Study which involved undertaking a cross-comparative report examining various socio-economic issues facing Norway’s, Germany’s and Japan’s business, legal, and social welfare systems and the efficacy of their various public and private stakeholder efforts in attempting to solve them.

Extension of Current Interests and Future Plans

  • Lastly, I would like to join this class because I think I will enjoy both the subject matter of the course immensely. Developing an understanding of the factors and ecosystem important for a start-up and actually following through with an innovative business solution allows me to reflect on my past experiences in business foresight, innovation and social issue analysis through practical application to real life project proposals.
  • I also hope to join the course to see how these elements impact the work culture, business decisions and firm structuring of startups! This TSM basically represents the final stage of any business analytical study. And I want in.

Starting a business

What types of business interest you?

  • I thought it would be fascinating to examine how firms respond to labour and societal pressures such as aging, increasingly prescriptive employment regulations and shrinking working populations. To that end, I am hoping to have the opportunity to engage with legal or financial technology firms which aim to address those concerns through fostering innovation and creativity in efficeincy technologies. Firms such as Korea's Legalinsight and Japan's MNTSQ.

What plan do you have in starting a business?

  • Given the current track for most lawyers, I will have to first qualify to the BAR by working with a licensed Singapore law firm to practice. I hope to establish my own legaltech company to address the inefficiency of daily tasks of law, including contract review, intellectual property, due diligence, research and expertise automation once I have established sufficient experience and credentials in the legal sector.

Where would you like to visit virtually?

  • I have a strong preference for well-developed Asian economies such as Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Through my previous reviews, I find that such countries usually provide the broadest range of corporate growth strategies applicable to Singapore's context in addition to being roughly comparable in socio-economic development and work culture.

What keeps you ticking?

No seriously, what keeps you alive?

  • Coffee mostly, but also a strong drive to understand the principles, workings and functions of how stuff works. Start-ups in particular are quite interesting because they are often faced with heavy resource and manpower limitations while trying to achieve a particular company vision independent of established corporate entities. I value the importance of having a clear vision of what I am trying to achieve in my career, and understanding both the existing precedents and future opportunities that characterize my current worldview. That's what keeps me going through 11 years of formal education and 4 years of legal education.
