Why TSM New York City?

* What motivates you to join TSM?
First, I have a personal interest towards entrepreneurship. Having worked in a few local innovative start-ups, I would like to go further and explore how similar budding firms in overseas countries thrive in their ecosystems. Furthermore, I did the Entrepreneurial Finance module in SMU and thus want to deepen my knowledge in how such firms finance their projects with the help of VCs, Angels and other forms of investors.

Second, I love technology. As student consultants under UOB-SMU AEI, my team placed heavy emphasis on digitalisation and with research, formulated a technology-based solution for a SME's long-term business strategy. I strongly believe that technological improvements have been and will continue to drive growth and improve peoples' lives.

Finally, I want to increase my exposure to an increasingly globalised world. With a first-hand experience in a faraway foreign country, I believe that I will be able to better appreciate America's culture in a way that cannot be achieved in a classroom, and hence believe that this trip will help me become a better global citizen.

* Why pick New York City?
With NYC expected to become the largest tech hub, I want to understand its latest innovations, network with people from tech firms and understand the various factors that have enabled it to outpace other cities such as Silicon Valley. Additionally, as a student looking for global exposure, I want to explore an environment vastly different from Singapore and am sure that NYC will provide an eyeopening experience.

Starting a business

* What types of business interest you?
I am interested in ecommerce. In my opinion, the emergence of ecommerce over the past few decades has greatly benefited society, allowing people like myself to access a wider variety of goods at lower prices than physical stores.

* What plan do you have in starting a business?
I have a close friend who is a chef exploring the possibility of expanding his popular hawker center stall to a restaurant, and is open to me joining him in the venture. It is an exciting opportunity, and given that I am on board, I would definitely look at how technology can be used to give the business an edge, an example being the use of software applications and robots to eliminate the need for waiters in labour-expensive Singapore.
