Why TSM New York City?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

This TSM presents an opportunity for me to experience companies culture overseas and it would be a great chance to learn from them to discover technology trends and the tech industry outside of Asia.

  • Why pick New York City?

With tech giants like Google and Amazon expanding their headquarters to New York, I felt that it would be a great destination for me to explore and learn from the companies situated there as to why startups and organisations choose to position themselves there (and what makes NYC so attractive for them).

Starting a business

  • What types of business interest you?

Eco-friendly technology solutions business that gives back to the society, creating web/mobile application solutions with and for a good cause/purpose.

  • What plan do you have in starting a business? (list existing business)

Prior to university, I was introduced to the concept of entrepreneurship and had the opportunity to experience the process of establishing a company through the 'Company of the Year' Program organised by Junior Achievement.

Avocado is a company started by my friends and I during our polytechnic days. We took part in the program and competition organised by Junior Achievement with the support from our advisors from Barclays Bank. Our company envisioned ourselves to be a leading eco-friendly solutions company. As part of this greater advocate, we created products (2 mobile apps and merchandises) in collaboration with Cool Earth (a non-profit organisation that works alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation and climate change) and Avocado has donated over 60% of our profits from the sales to support them in their mission to halt rainforest destruction.

Our company won 1st place in the regional rounds and got the opportunity to represent Singapore in the Asia Pacific's 'Company of the Year' Competition held overseas in 2015. We competed against teams originating from Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, Malaysia and more, emerging as the recipients of 2 of the 6 awards at the competition (Best Financial Management Award and FedEx Access Award respectively).
