Student Name DJI CoolHobo
Ayesha Aziz ALKAFF DJI was a really insightful visit, as we got to see the drones in action! They truly focus on constantly improving their technology, strongly devoting in that aspect. DJI seems lean and committed to being a key leader in the field. Coolhobo comes across as a company that knows their market extremely well. Further, they have an amazing technical knowledge on the technical aspect of AR! They embrace breakthrough technologies like no other company so far.
Bernadine LYE Su Hui It was interesting to see how DJI's drones play a part in various industries- including agriculture, and helping fire fighters with the Notre Dame fire. It was interesting to see how much DJI has improved from its first ever drone, and how inspiration for innovation can be everywhere - even from a simple hike in a park. The founder's dedication to technology was key to the company's success. China's young consumer group has unique specific traits - being not loyal to brands, interested in the "new". It was ingenious how the founder managed to find the gap and opportunities in the market. The resilience of the team despite past failures proved to be worthy. China's ecosystem also plays a significant role in the development of AR in consumer experiences - with integrated payment and the power of social media.
CHANG Jia Li It’s interesting how AGRAS drones can help in agriculture and improve efficient in the operation. It really make the future possible with DRONES, make impossible things possible 😁 The founder mentioned that don’t start a business with your best friend which I agree as there might be conflict of interest between both parties. I’m impressed by how the founder chose not to give up despite having two failures in starting a business. It shows that if you have the determination, luck and knowledge, things will work out eventually.
Chantalle NG It was interesting to see how drones are able to greatly help people, other than personal entertainment. The one feature that stood out was how drones are used to help fire fighters fight fire. I think it is a great demonstration of how advanced technology will be able to aid people during such crisis. With an in-depth explanation of what AR is, it gave me insights as to how the collection of data can create personalisations that can create endless user experiences.
Cheryl KOH Zhi Ying “Unlike other companies that focus on marketing, DJI focuses on product-innovation.” AR is about the input, the computing brain, and user interface, and not just the visual aspect we see. It replicates human’s innate desire to not only understand places, but also attach meaning to them.
Debbie LEE Shan Ying Important to always get feedback, and be flexible with new ideas. Because of feedback from a hiker they created the ‘bottle drone’ Can be a company that has no competitors because it depends on what the company does. You can create a new ‘niche’ for yourself. For them they have no competitors to learn from so user testing is very crucial for them to constantly improve on their products
Derrick LEE Ming Yang Ideas don't come to you if you're sitting at home and waiting. Go out there and be like the product manager at DJI. Mavic Pro stemmed from a simple idea that the product manager found it inconvenient to bring the drone with him during hiking. CoolHobo only got into an accelerator after 2 pivots. The accelerator helped them understand team dynamics, fund raising and branding. They successfully raised venture capital after the initial seed funding and will be raising their series A soon.
Gary CHUA Rongjie Drones have a lot of potential to penetrate various industries. Being used mainly in the filming industry now, DJI has moved on to utilise AI to further enhance the experience. However in my opinion I think that the next hurdle will be the regulations and monitoring especially with urban cities having strict airspace rules. This is currently now mitigated through restrictions via software. But the question is will this be abused? The most important thing about entrepreneurship as mentioned by the founder is teamwork. Being able to understand your team member’s working style and understand how to complement each other. Another thing was that the founder is being realistic, focusing on building SDKs to integrate into current applications which I feel is the right strategy for the Chinese market where many are used to using Wechat or Alipay.
GOH Jin Qiang It is important to find out the limitation of DJI current product in order to grow and innovate – The birth of DJI Mavic Pro was discovered by DJI product manager during a hike as he sees the importance of having a portable, on-the-go product for adventure. Other than understanding customer’s needs, CoolHobo sees the importance to “personalise customer experience with future in mind”. Thus, their innovations are not limited to today’s state of technology, but rather building SKU that could be integrated in tomorrow’s technology.
Gwendolyn GOH Wen Hui DJI came in second place in a 100m speed contest against Audi and Tesla, with a speed of 94km/h in 3.94s. Their drones are portable with location tracking and obstacle avoidance. A use case for the drones include agricultural purposes for efficient spraying of pesticides. AR is massively coming into gaming. CoolHobo uses AR to engage consumers, existing or new ones, with endlessly new experiences, creating a deep emotion connection. This satisfies visitor’s hunger for new experiences with constant novelty. For example, CoolHobo is able to create new pop up stores in Malls that are not physically there.
HO Wei Hong Use your own product to know the shortcomings in different scenario. Mavic was born this way. Collect lots of information from users, connect these information together and collide them to form meaningful insights
HOW Zhiteng It was insightful to know how drones are used for industrial, governments and filming. It was interesting to see how the different technologies allowed the drones to have different features that are beneficial for its intended users. It seems difficult to be an app startup in China. Cool to see the CEO's way to tackle the problems of super apps. I wonder what the future holds for CoolHobo.
LIM Yi Bin Product design comes with multiple iterations and with constant change, user feedbacks become ever more important for the realignment of use cases and target audience With vision being the primary sense for processing information, it is crucial to create a product that is both functional and stimulating to the target audience
Mathilda NG There were many interesting drones available from commercialized ones to medic. It was fascinating to see that the drones could be useful in many possible ways such as for agriculture purposes as well. ‘AR bridges the gap between experience and convenience’
Mohammad Hazmie Bin JAAFAR You will never fly if you're too scared of failure. You will never know what changes you can bring to the world without taking the first step. Be bold, be brave. "AR replicate our innate human desire to not only understand but to attach meaning to them.. it is grounded in the tenets of biology. We add a little bonus a give users superpowers"
Muhammad Hafizuddin Bin ABD RAHIN DJI, which was ranked ninth in Robotics Business Review’s “Top Robotics Companies of 2017” had a wide array of products ranging from commercial to professional use. The rapid development of drone technology have a huge potential to affect many industries like construction and agriculture. CoolHobo is an AR/VR company that focuses on retail. A more interactive experience while shopping online would definitely attract numbers. However, the technology is still rather young and would require more development to certain functions before the general public would actually find it useful enough to adopt.
ONG Li Ting I learnt from the speaker that the future is possible as long as you have the PASSION, DEDICATION & DREAM. The drones were really cool, especially the one that is controllable with hand movement as demonstrated by the drone pilot. It is important to perform requirements gathering and understand the needs of the consumers. I was amazed with the Cool Hobo AI technology. I love the one that reveals the inside of a product as people tend to have the tendency of opening a packaging and ended up spoiling the whole packaging. I feel that the technology introduced by cool hobo can be applied to many other relevant fields like the education sector.
ONG Lin Sheng DJI is well known for its drones, when Mr Steven showcase some of their drones, I was amazed by DJI Spark! Somehow, it sparks joy in me :) I have not heard of CoolHobo before, knowing that they are making use of AR/VR technology in shopping got me interested in the future shopping experience and hoping they would expand their business worldwide in the near future
ONG Yan Kai The drone demo was extremely cool. One of the drones could immediately retract back into its original position after being manually pulled away. Another drone could be controlled using hand gestures. With these advancements, we may soon see consumer drones that can do more than just snap photos. The talk by the CEO was valuable as he shared his past experiences and failures, not just his successes. Initially, I thought that the VR solutions may not be very scalable since a lot of manual work needs to be done (tagging of each item's barcode, labelling them etc). But he shared that he sees a future where these annotations are done by the users via the app instead of the developers. It reminded me of how Google utilizes captcha to have users improve its image recognition A.I. technology.
Shaun John CHEETHAM Drones have always been fascinating to me because of the sheer complexity that goes into designing and producing one. This becomes even more complex as they try to make drones usable and accessible to amateurs and Norma consumers. Learning about how DJI has transformed their product through the years demonstrates their keen understanding of what their consumers want and the technological edge. CoolHobo was an interesting company to visit because the founder had shared with us his entrepreneurship journey, which included lessons learnt from his previous failed startups and finally how he got to where he is now. It was also fun to see all the future plans that they had for the company and functions that are planned. The future that they envision for shopping is definitely different and a lot more interactive.
SIM Li Jin having an inspiration at national park, could lead to such innovative products. by understanding the current market, one would have to make the necessary changes to keep itself afloat, which is to focus on AR and offer it as a service. "Shoppers can not have the best of both shopping worlds"
Stanley LIN Weijie Singapore is a tropical country. Therefore, waterproof is needed for drones in order to be implemented everywhere in Singapore Technology requires 5G, not visible in Singapore context. However, if it is possible, huge capital requirements is needed.

TAY Wei Xuan DJI is able to implement its drone solutions for many industries in many interesting ways. For example, the fire department in Paris were able to leverage on DJI drones that were equipped with thermal cameras to put out fires more efficiently. Being able to learn from past mistakes is key if you want to be an entrepreneur. It is also important not to start a business with close friends.
TEO Wei Shen Impressive as the flying demonstrations are, I took away from the visit the need to have dedication to technology - DJI views technology as the most important part of their company. Apart from an appreciation of the definition of AR and what it does, I realise that CoolHobo's AR technology have the potential to, for example, reverse the "retail apocalypse". The visit was also a realisation of how "traditional brick-and-mortar stores have to evolve with the needs and demands of shoppers".
TIONG Nai Shi As simple as an idea might seem, such as making drones compact, the story behind its creation might not be that simple. The story behind the idea of the Mavic was really one that you would not expect. Although you think you know the market, you cannot predict what setbacks you might face when everything starts going forward. Even after facing setback after setback and even failure, do not put yourself down, pick yourself up, take it as a learning point and grow from there.
YONG Fu Xiang The future of possible Choose co-founder wisely. Find one that complement your strength and weakness. Operation and user acquisition cost must be carefully evaluated as they can be very costly, causing startup to fail.
YUEN Chui Shan Mavic Pro’s structure was modelled to be the size of a water bottle. Use data to create personalized and endless experience.
