Why TSM Hong Kong?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

With an interest in health tech startups, and eventually starting a startup of my own, I hope that this experience could help me gain valuable insights of the ecosystem and dynamics of the startup scene in Hong Kong and China. Also, it would be a great opportunity for me to gain a deeper understanding of the investment opportunities, research infrastructure and support startups receive in Hong Kong and China, how it differs from Singapore, and how the differences between these countries/region affect the startup ecosystem and success. Lastly, with an interest in health tech startups, China is definitely a large market with plenty of opportunities. Hence I would like to participate in this TSM to discover how startups were able to succeed in this market and what are some of the strategies I can consider when I start my own startup.

  • Why pick Hong Kong?

China has the largest population in the world and is overtaking US in dominating the tech sector. As such, with the tremendous potential in this country, I believe that this TSM to Hong Kong would provide me with the opportunity to gain deeper understanding on startups can tap on the opportunities and succeed in this country. Moreover, Hong Kong has a close proximity to Shenzhen, labeled as the Silicon Valley of China, thus there remains many valuable insights about Hong Kong startup ecosystem, infrastructure, support and talent that I can definitely learn from and apply to when I start my own business.

Starting a business

  • What types of businesses interest you?

Health Technology Startups (creating accessible healthcare for rural populations / improving healthcare outcomes)

  • What plan do you have in starting a business?

My plan is to start a career in consulting first to gain the necessary skills and knowledge needed to run a successful business and to expand my network. Currently, I do not have a concrete business plan in mind as impactful healthcare technology requires niche skill-sets and deep industry expertise. Hence, I hope to gain those necessary skills and expertise before starting my own business so as to increase the probability of success.

Past Experiences (Relevant)

1. Strategy and Corporate Venturing Intern - Koninklijke Philips N.V

  • Conducted due diligence and prepared a financial model for an investment in a health tech start-up’s series A.
  • Researched on the health tech market and trends in APAC to develop sound investment opportunities.

2. Crossing the Chasm Challenge 2017 - 1st Runner-Up (Social Enterprise Business Plan Challenge)

  • Performed market research and developed recommendations for the Indonesia-based social enterprise, Du’Anyam, in their expansion into Japan, Singapore and Taiwan

What keeps you ticking?

My goal in life is to do what I love and love what I do. As such, I am passionate in pursuing a career that allows me to make a tangible impact as I enjoy the fulfilment of knowing that my work has helped to improve someone or a community's lives.
