Why TSM Hong Kong?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

The golden opportunity to interact with business professionals with expert knowledge excites me as I can directly interact with and observe their working patterns as they guide me with their valuable experiences. I am especially interested to understand how they leveraged on technology to drive their business to success in today's ever-changing technological landscape. As an Operations Management major, I hope to be able to draw out key points from my experience through exploring how the business people in Hong Kong handle processes and share my insights and new-found knowledge with my future classmates in following modules as well as my future internships and jobs.

  • Why pick Hong Kong?

Both Singapore and Hong Kong are the 4 Asian Tigers that have flourished because of rapid industrialisation in the 1980s. Fast forward to today, the thriving start-ups coupled with the booming innovation sector in Hong Kong have created a conducive strategic business environment in Hong Kong. This can be seen in Hong Kong's smart city and smart homes concepts, just to name a few. Singapore is also similar in some ways however I would like to observe and learn what and how Hong Kong is different in terms of their strengths and experiences.

On a more personal note, I can speak Cantonese and I hope to be able to interact in Cantonese in business terms. This widens my opportunities in a globalised world.

Starting a business

  • What types of businesses interest you?

Ecommerce, Supply Chain, App Development, IoT

  • What plan do you have in starting a business?

Together with a group of 4 other members, I have applied for an Entrepreneurship Practicum with a business proposal to digitalize name cards. We are still in the process of awaiting our proposal approval and hopefully embark on the first phase of our business plan with the funds that we are sponsored with.

Past Experiences (optional)

  • Promoter at Cathay Pacific

I previously had a job attachment with Cathay Pacific to promote Asia Miles, their frequent flyer programme to passengers by explaining the rewards and sign-up procedure, using different languages, English, Mandarin and Cantonese. Duing the process, I developed interpersonal skills by approaching different kinds of passengers at the Cathay Pacific check-in counter, generating 88 sign-ups for Asia Miles in a week. It was truly a refreshing experience!

  • Talks on Technology

I enjoy attending talks about the applications of technology in businesses. One of the talks I attended in SMU was the 7th Annual SKBI Conference. This conference gathered well-established industry practitioners, start-ups, regulators, and academic researchers, such as OCBC, Grab, DBS, Singtel, just to name a few. I also networked with some Professors from SIS. They shared their diverse experiences on how to embrace, respond to, and adopt changes related to large data while simultaneously facing the challenge of coping with rapidly changing analytic requirements.

What keeps you ticking?

  • Life Motto: Passion, Persevere, Prevail.

As long as we are passionate in whatever we do, we will achieve our purpose because we are willing and enthusiastic to put in our efforts. However, at times, we may be faced with setbacks and challenges. We must remember our passion and persevere till the end. Our grit and determination will have a chance to be paid of one day! Hence, with passion and perseverance, we will prevail!
