Why TSM South Korea?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

Having interned at Accenture - one of the biggest tech consulting firms in the world - I realised that MNCs are laden with process bottlenecks and inefficiencies, simply due to their vast size. This is often overlooked and the problem is left unaddressed as the company still reaps a significant profit even without solving these problems. These issues are often nonexistent in SMEs and startups though, as for these smaller firms, being efficient and working at optimal productivity is essential to ensure survival.

As someone who is highly interested in IT consulting (specifically, IT strategy and business process restructuring), I'm really keen on learning about business processes and organisational structures in place in start-ups that allow them to function effectively. As such, I believe that TSM will grant me the opportunity to observe and learn a great deal from actual startups and real-world exposure rather than through theories we learn in classrooms.

  • Why pick South Korea?

South Korea is increasingly turning into a powerhouse for tech startups. With amazingly advanced technological infrastructure, a broadband penetration rate of 97% and a huge commercial and governmental emphasis on technological R&C, it is no surprise that when one thinks of South Korea, one thinks of technology.

What amazes me especially about South Korea is the speed at which their technological progress took place: not too long ago, South Korea was relatively unheard of in the technological wave. Now, pretty much every household has a Korean technological product; Samsung smartphones or tablets to LG LCD TVs are all the rave these days. As such, I feel South Korea would be the ideal destination to observe individuals and businesses leverage on technology, and learn a great deal from.

Starting a business

  • What types of business interest you?

- Social media
- Consulting
- e-Commerce

  • What plan do you have in starting a business?

I'm hoping to start a business before I graduate, to leverage on the multiple platforms available in school, such as IIE's incubator, and the multiple grants available to students. I'm currently enrolled in Prof Desai's IT-Business Innovation course, and I intend to make use of the skills acquired from this course in starting my business.

Past Experiences

  • Describe your past experience (entrepreneurship, or works in start ups etc

I'm currently pursuing my IS480 project with Envisage Education, a social entrepreneurship firm, and in the process, I am trying my best to understand the makings of a startup and how things are run, especially considering that because of the size of a start-up, employees are often required to hold multiple roles and undertake multiple responsibilities.

I also undertook a summer internship as a tech consulting intern at Accenture, and in my internship, I obtained first-hand experience and examined the inefficiencies of corporations and learnt how to reduce/remove these inefficiencies.
