Why TSM South Korea?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

To be able to learn about tech companies based in South Korea, and about the kind of culture which affects the way organisations work in South Korea. Most importantly, to be given a chance to learn how to pitch to secure internships.

  • Why pick South Korea?

I have recently read an article by Bloomberg News and it mentioned that South Korea is ranked first in terms of research & development capability, productivity, technology density and patent activity. It came as a coincidence when I saw the emailer regarding TSM to South Korea. I therefore truly believe that a trip to South Korea would be very beneficial in helping me to understand technology as a whole better. On a side note, I have not been to South Korea before, thus I would like to take this opportunity to visit South Korea.

Internship Opportunities

  • What types of internship opportunities interest you?

Personally, I love to teach. In addition, I would like to start my own business too. Hopefully and ideally, I vision to start a school, where I can incorporate both my passion - teaching, and my interest - entrepreneurship.

Therefore, I would be interested in any internship opportunities which offer job scopes that involve teaching, and human management.

  • Any ideal firms (based in South Korea) that you wishes to join?

Few of the biggest companies (Seeking for human resources or financial analysis internship opportunities)
- Shinhan Financial Group
- Samsung Life Insurance

Startups in South Korea
- KakaoTalk
- DevSisters

Starting a business

  • What types of business interest you?

1. As mentioned above, I would to start my own school in future, simply because I see the importance of education in moulding the future generations.
2. A restaurant
3. An iPhone app where people all over the world can compare prices of goods and services via a forum service

  • What plan do you have in starting a business?

I plan to first work in a tuition centre, or a school, or a restaurant. Basically, I hope to gain insights and experience through interning or working at such places to better understand the business, and, more importantly, possible challenges that I might face in future as an entrepreneur.

Past Experiences

  • Describe your past experience (entrepreneurship, or works in start ups etc)

Recently, I was the Vice-President of starringSMU’13 (Largest Community Service Project (CSP) in SMU). It was not so much of an entrepreneurial project, however, through this project, I learnt how to manage the resources such as money and time well. Also, we, as a team, had to be risk-taking at times so as to maximise the funds raised. We managed to raise a record-breaking of $35,000 over 2 days of charity carwash, through marketing of the carwash event and sales of car tickets.

I have also participated in an social-entrepreneurship project, Citibank-YMCA Youth for Causes 2006, over a span of eight months. I was the team leader, where I learnt to facilitate reconciliation of differences amongst teammates, liaised with external parties to establish good working partnership and created public awareness to 30,000 people via street donation drives and talks, involving 130 volunteers. We managed to raise an eleven-fold $18,000 for Very Special Arts (VSA), with a seed funding of $1,600.
