Why TSM South Korea? (한국에 가야하는 이유)

  • Opportunity to learn from TSM participants

TSM South Korea is one of the most competitive module in the school of information systems.According to seniors from previous batch, they had 80 applicants applying to the TSM South Korea Module and only 20 were chosen.”I am very convinced and inspired by Yahoo’s current CEO Marissa Meyer’s quote : “working with smart people challenges you to think and work on another level than you thought possible.” I believe that through interactions and discussions on technopreneurship by aspiring technopreneurs will be very beneficial to my startup dream. Participants of TSM may offer opportunities of collaborations and sharing of ideas/experiences that can improve my current business idea.

  • Learning through experience

Starting new businesses and mentoring new startups have always been my interest.Even with the theories and knowledge on how to start a company,I have yet to interact with successful founders of startups.

Why South Korea?

  • Outstanding business models

South Korea has a very strong technopreneurship scene in recent years and is world’s no.1 in ICT development index. With their strong broadband network infrastructure and high smartphone penetration, it is a good example for aspiring entrepreneurs like us to learn and apply to our Singapore market. Apart from it being very technologically advance ,many firms in Korea are known to be late movers in the international market (Samsung vs Apple, Airbnb vs HanIntel , Whatsapp vs KakaoTalk) and yet these firms managed to secure market share in Korea. This really interest me to know, interact and learn more from the start up technopreneurs that managed to succeed in their market.

  • Amazing Culture

I am really amazed by the Korea's culture and their way of life. I have always been a fan of SNSD, Big Bang and even wrote my Academic writing paper on the Korean music industry ! This TSM will allow me to look at south korea through a very close up perspective during the company and cultural visits ( and maybe meet some Kpop idols on the streets).

Internship Opportunities (인턴쉽 기회)

What types of internship opportunities interest you?

I have yet to fulfill my IS internship requirement and hence I would like to do an IS related internship that focus on Data Analytics, Business intelligence or as an intern in a startup. Any internship that will allow me to learn more about managing startups will be a bonus.

Any ideal firms (based in South Korea) that you wishes to join?

Starting a business (새로운 사업을 도전)

What types of business interest you?

  1. Start-ups that succeeded with little start-up cost and managed to gain market share as a late mover in the market.
  2. Data analytics and big data related businesses(big/small firms).
  3. Businesses that works with search engine optimisation.
  4. Businesses that involves social media or social gaming.

What plan do you have in starting a business? (list existing business)
Together with a like-minded friend, Tan Yun Xi, that I have known since my year 1 course of study, we have similar ambition of breaking free from the norm of getting prestigious jobs and to create a business that we can call our own. We have taken part in many competitions together to learn and explore the ways and methods that we can apply to our business idea. We are currently in the process of getting funding through the SMU innovation awards 2013. In our business idea, we aim to utilize our very own Singlish for various business purposes (linguistic and sentimental analytics) through the use of natural language processing and artificial intelligence.

Existing business : Simply5

Simply5 is an online social enterprise that aims to match volunteerism and existing social needs in our society. This business idea won the Citi-YMCA social enterprise 2012 top ten award. We were mentored by IBM's managing director, Miss Janet Ang, during our implementation phase of business.

Business in incubation : SimplyX, LalehLor and TravelSmart

Past experiences (과거의 경험)

Past Experiences
To date, we have embarked on SAGE 2013 journey as mentors and splash award 2013 competition with our start-up ideas.

SAGESG
SAGESG is a competition for JC students to come together and develop business plans that directly address social needs through their services or products. As mentors, we have partake in trainings to learn more about the skills needed to start a business, such as business creation fundamentals, understanding business models using business model canvas, start up finances and developing partnerships and operational considerations. With the knowledge, we continue learning and guide JC teams to implement their social enterprise new start up ideas.

Both Yun Xi and I mentored 2 teams each, and through our teamwork and exchanging of skills, feedback and knowledge, 3 of our teams succeeded in making through to the SAGE finals, which features the top 5 JC teams out of 20.
SCSS splash awards 2013
Yun Xi and I took part in SCSS splash awards 2013 organised by The Singapore Computer Society Student Chapter with the support of InfoComm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). This year, Splash Awards focuses on innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship through the development of applications regarding the use of government data from data.gov.sg. It required us to create an application that has to be ready for launch into the market.Even though we did not get through to the semi-final round, it was a great experience to learn that demand, practicality and feasibility are crucial factors for the success of a possible business.
