What are we up to?
23 Feb, 2018
Prepping for the interim presentation and report. We've completed our second cut of insights, gotten feedback from YMCA, and now we're just tying up loose ends and seeing how else we can value-add to the VWO.
Project Description
Volunteers are individuals or groups who provide services to an organization for no financial gain, in order to benefit another individual, group or organization. Beyond simply providing their services or labour, volunteers in Singapore are more likely to donate, provide technical expertise for the Voluntary Welfare Organization (VWO) itself, and even connect the VWO to other resources and connections.
However, because they are unpaid, their financial impact is unaccounted for and unmeasured, and the social impact that they make has until recently been unquantifiable. This makes VWOs more likely to forget the importance of cultivating a strong volunteer workforce. On the flip side, this can create inefficiencies in programmes that have too many volunteers but impact a declining number of beneficiaries, for instance. Hence, the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) would like to study its volunteer force from 2012 to 2017 across all 14 community service (CS) programmes to assess its efficiency and highlight areas for improvement.
The Client
Established in 1902, the YMCA of Singapore is a volunteer-based Christian organisation that seeks to serve and impact all members of the community, regardless of race, language or religion, through programmes, services and enterprises to develop the body, mind and spirit.
YMCA celebrated 115 years of service to the Singapore community in 2017.
The Team
We are three graduating Social Sciences students taking a second major in Analytics. We've taken modules from Psychology Research Methods II to Visual Analytics, but our beginnings as Social Sciences students have inculcated a strong sense of social responsibility that we've decided to combine with our Analytics Practicum. We're excited (and scared) to work on this but we'll do our best!
