Beyond simply providing their services or labour, volunteers in Singapore are more likely to donate, provide technical expertise for the Voluntary Welfare Organization (VWO) itself, and even connect the VWO to other resources and connections.

However, because they are unpaid, their financial impact is unaccounted for and unmeasured, and the social impact that they make has until recently been unquantifiable. This makes VWOs more likely to forget the importance of cultivating a strong volunteer workforce. Hence, the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) would like to categorize and quantify the impact that volunteers make - as compared to other important aspects such as funding and staff - on their key programmes in a Social Return on Investment (SROI) framework that will map out the exact quantitative impact made by the programme on their respective stakeholders.

What are we up to?

15 Apr, 2018
After catching up on sleep over the weekend, we would like to say we are finally done with our Analytics Practicum! It has been a whirlwind of activity - countless meetings, endless Telegram chats, a lot of consultations and re-thinking our life choices - but...we made it! Endless thank yous to our friends who have supported us emotionally, to our sponsor for their enthusiasm, and to our mentor Meena for her patience in handling three data nooblets.

Project Description

Volunteers are individuals or groups who provide services to an organization for no financial gain, in order to benefit another individual, group or organization.

On the flip side, this can create inefficiencies in programmes that have too many volunteers but impact a declining number of beneficiaries, for instance. Hence, our VWO would like to study its volunteers from 2015 to 2017, and to understand what affects their recruitment of new volunteers.

The Client

Our client is one of the biggest VWOs in Singapore, with nearly all of its programmes being volunteer-run. Furthermore, while they do collect data, they have been limited to simply seeing the increases and decreases in volunteer hours, instead of making sense of their data. Given the broader context and their specific VWO needs, it's even more important that they know what their data is actually telling them.

The Team

We are three graduating Social Sciences students taking a second major in Analytics. We've taken modules from Psychology Research Methods II to Visual Analytics, but our beginnings as Social Sciences students have inculcated a strong sense of social responsibility that we've decided to combine with our Analytics Practicum. We're excited (and scared) to work on this but we'll do our best!
