Hi Yunna,
Lovely work and interesting interpretation! Please allow me to share my opinions below.
Aesthetic:
- I really like the presentation of sunburst diagram. But I do believe that there are more friendly way to present the interactivities, for example, I think check box are more suitable than drop-down in this case, and maybe a time interval slider would make the filtering easier.
- The tableau workbook well demonstrates the investigation logic and it's very easy to follow! I think better formatting would make it more attractive though. For example, the overlapping of points and label on 'point overview' is distracting.
Clarity:
- For the sunburst diagram, it would be great if a map is presented next to it to assist the perception of the actual location of those routes.
- For the network graph in tableau workbook, I think it would be very helpful if there are legends showing the indications of point size and colors. I believe the color indicates different gate types, but the different colors representing the same objects in different workbook tabs is a bit confusing.
- For 'pattern of life', is there a better way to include more dimensions (apart from timestamp) into the chart rather than filtering to derive information?
- The way you detect the car-ids with long stays is very interesting! However, have you considered that they made multiple entrances to the preserve? Afterall, they are not staying in the preserve for that long.
It has been such a joy being your study partner and working with you on this assignment. You are very welcome to comment on my work! :)
Thank you,
Bijun
Hi Yunna,
Overall it's an interesting and effective way to visualize and uncover patterns! Some of my feedback as well 😉
Aesthetics:
- Sunburst chart is good, interactive and helps with visualization, just probably too many different colors for each checkpoint and would be excellent if it can relate back to the actual map on the checkpoints and path. The filtering can also be
- Heatmap of timestamp by days and hour is good but perhaps consider a different color and re-sizing it smaller as it hard to view after a while with too many differentiating tones of reds; also consider adding hours of 0 to 5 to better visualize no traffic during these hours.
Clarity:
- In the network graphtraffic load of each path, the size of the points and intensity of the paths are abit confusing. Generalgate7 seems to be the heaviest bypassed checkpoint but from a path intensity perspective, it seems generalgate2, rangerstop0&2 are the most taken path.
- You have also indicated two-way traffic for the path, it would be ideal if it can be drilled down to one-way and it might reveal more specific details and patterns. Interactive with tooltips details of the gate and path would be great as well.
- In Rule Violation: it would be good to show the exact gate and rangerstop it entered and the route. Looking at the numbers of gate count can help identity abnormality, but I guess also the duration.
- Sunburst is good for showing the path taken but not so ideal for comparing volume/intensity across time (quarter/monthly/day/hour) or car-type even though it does shows the total percentage or record or car-ids (not sure about that as well).
Cheers,
Zac
Hi Yunna,
I like your work because your way of detecting patterns is so different from mine. Below are my feedbacks:
Aesthetics:
- Sunburst chart is quite good. But you might like to have less colors. For example, you can use same color for same kind of place (i.e.: green for campsite, blue for entrance, etc.).
Clarity:
- Is it possible to do a zoomable sunburst chart? So that we can have better interaction and clearer view to detect potential patterns.
Warmest,
Yinjue
