Discovery of Vandalism

Ten Observations of Communication Patterns

For interactive dashboards, please refer to Online Workbook at Tableau Plublic

  1. Overview of communication patterns for three days
Comm_Patterns_Overview
  • Observation 1:

As we can see there’s always two spike at Coaster Alley at 11:00am and 4pm every day. Since the Pavilion is located at Coaster Alley, so we consider those spikes are resulted from Scott’s show. While on Sunday afternoon, the spike was missing, we consider it’s due to cancellation of the show.

  • Observation 2:

As we can see, there’re two unusual spike, one is at Wet Land, between 11:30am to 12:30pm, the other is at Entry Corridor, between 12:00pm and 12:20pm. From the map we know that the only exit of the Pavilion is at Wet land, so the first spike should because of discovery of vandalism. The vandalism should happen at the Pavilion or Wet Land. The second spike maybe due to the arrival of police, since it appears at the Entry Corridor. To sum up, we speculate the vandalism was happened at the border of Wet Land and Coaster Alley, near the Pavilion, before 11:30am.

  • Observation 3:
Check-in records in the Pavilion for 3 days

From the check-in records of the Pavilion (32,33), we can find there’s no check in from 9:30am to 11:30am and 2:30pm to 4:30pm. So we can know that’s the show time. While on Sunday, there’s no more check-in records after 12:00pm, so we can make sure that the vandalism was discovered at around 12:00pm on Sunday, and the vandalism was happened at the Pavilion. What are the communication patterns when police arrived? Choose 12:05pm to 12:06pm, when communication volumes reached the peak.

  1. Communication Patterns When Police Arrive
Connections_when_police_arrive_overview
  • Observation 4:
Pattern 2

Picture above shows the out degree of communications at the moment police arrive. As we can see, most connections are between visitors and 1278894, which we consider is park announcement account. 1278894 sent out announcements, also, visitors from every location in the park also sent messages to 1278894.

  • Observation 5:
Pattern 4

839736 sends out message at Entry Corridor, while receives messages mainly form Wet Land. Since we assume 839736 is an information counter that provides consultation services form visitors, so at that moment, something must happen at Wet Land that caused visitors asked 839736 for help. Most likely, it’s because vandalism was just discovered.

  • Observation 6:
Groups_pattern3

Visitors tend to visit the park as groups, either big or small.

  • Observation 7:
Pattern 3

Visitors tend to visit the park as groups, either big or small. Usually announcement account sends messages to the leader or tour guide of the group, then that person forwards the message to team members.

  1. Communication Patterns When Vandalism was discovered
  • Observation 8:
Indegree_when vand discovered

Above shows the in-degree communication patterns. It’s obvious that, at that moment, a lot of visitors at Wet Land are connecting with external, which we assume is a social media platform. So when special things happen, people tends to share them on social media platform.

  • Observation 9:
Outdegree_when vand discovered

Above shows the out-degree communication patterns. At this moment, the news of vandalism hasn’t been widely spread, so not so many people connect to 839736 to ask for information. Which also confirmed that, vandalism must just be discovered.

  • Observation 10:

When we narrow suspects to 17 people, we find all of them don’t have any communication records
