HOME ABOUT US PROJECT OVERVIEW PROJECT MANAGEMENT DOCUMENTATION

User Personas

Primary Persona: Michael
Michael is a 24 year old Singapore Management University School of Social Sciences undergraduate. He often takes part in studies conducted by the faculty and is fairly familiar with the process. However, the majority of studies he has taken part in have been conducted in-person and surveys or other documents he has had to fill out were on paper. He has also found that some studies depend on the time of day, or require updates from participants throughout the day. This makes it rather inconvenient to schedule and isn’t motivating to take part in such extensive studies, even as a paid participant. As is common with people his age, he owns a smartphone, specifically a Samsung Galaxy S4. He has also noted the benefits of recently introduced smartwatches as an accessory to smartphones and owns a Moto 360.

Secondary Persona: Alex
Alex is a 30 year old research assistant conducting meditation studies. He is in the midst of conducting studies that specifically require participants to take part in meditation exercises throughout the day and provide feedback about their experience. Other forms of data, such as environmental conditions, may also prove useful in his studies. He is fairly familiar with web interfaces as a user due to his work experience but is not an expert in web management. He does wish however, to be able to conduct his studies remotely, as he requires participants to be comfortable when doing the prescribed exercises and does not want to inconvenience them with having to visit multiple times a day.

Scenarios

Scenario 1: Start on a programme for the first time and clear today’s session
Michael has just been signed up as a paid participant for a meditation study. He has been told by Alex that the study will not be conducted in person, but rather through an Android application called the ReFokus Meditation app. Michael is intrigued to find out that the application supports Android Wearables, and Alex encourages him to use the app in conjunction with his Moto 360, as he will be able to obtain more information about Michael’s experience. He does point out however, that the first programme he enrols in will not require the smartwatch. He finds the appropriate app in the Play Store and downloads it. As instructed by Alex for his first session, Michael returns home to find a quiet area. He ensures that his Moto 360 is currently paired with his Galaxy S4, and starts the app, finding himself at the login screen. Using registration details provided by Alex, he registers a new account and in the process acknowledges a Terms & Conditions page, before logging in. Michael is now prompted to select a new programme. Finding only the basic meditation course available, he selects it from the list presented to him. An introductory survey is presented to him, and he fills out all the required fields. He is then sent to the main menu, which shows him his current progress with the programme. Michael then starts the first session from the menu. He is prompted to give permission to download a podcast required for the session, and does so. After a momentary wait, the podcast has been downloaded and he plays it. Following the instructions from the podcast, he goes through his first meditation session. At the end of the podcast session, he is presented with a post-session survey. Again, he fills out all the required fields, and is then sent back to the main menu. He can see that his progress has been tracked and that he has finished the session for today. He mentally notes the remaining daily sessions, and exits the app. Thereafter, he continues about his own activities.

Scenario 2: Start on a new programme that allows smartwatch integration after the completion of a previous one
Michael has just finished his final session in the beginner’s programme. Upon completion of the post-session survey, he is sent to a programme list to select a new programme. From this list he selects the intermediate course. He is briefly informed by the app that this programme allows for information to be collected from the smartwatch. Upon returning to the main menu, he mentally notes the new daily sessions to be conducted and closes the app, as he intends to begin the new programme tomorrow. The next day, Michael finds again a quiet corner in his home to conduct a mediation session. He first puts on his Moto 360, then enters the app on his phone and navigates through the main menu until he finds the options for smartwatch integration. He ensures that his Moto 360 is currently paired and recognized by the app, indicating that the app is now ready to receive information from the smartwatch. He As usual, he begins a session and downloads the required podcast. Checking his smartwatch one more time, he begins the podcast session. At the end of the session, he completes the now familiar post-session survey and submits it, and is returned to the main menu. He notes that there is an additional acknowledgment that this time, heartbeat and environmental temperature data was sent along with the survey information. After checking that his programme progress was reflected in the main menu, he closes the app and returns to his usual activities.
