Why TSM?

  • What motivates you to join TSM?

As someone who enjoys travelling and experiencing different cultures, I am thrilled by the opportunity that travel bubble TSM presents. Although it is currently unlikely that we will be able to travel, I am looking forward to learn more about the startup scene and entrepreneurial spirit in other countries. We are very fortunate in Singapore where startups receive tremendous support from the government through incubators, accelerators together with generous grants. Furthermore, as a global hub with a strong economy and infrastructure, local startups are able to reach the region from our tiny island. Hence, I would like to understand how startups in other countries are able to overcome challenges and remain competitive. With technology being more accessible, both for businesses and users, together with the rising urgency, I believe that as students in SMU SCIS, we are in a strong position to leverage our knowledge to digitally transform businesses to value add to end users.

Starting a business

  • What types of business interest you?

I am interested in traditional businesses that have yet to face significant digital transformation as I believe these are the businesses that I can bring the most impact to. Some examples of these are Traditional Chinese Medicine, wet markets, farming.

  • What plan do you have in starting a business?

As a land scarce nation, Singapore is unable to allocate large land parcels to farming however Singapore still seeks to increase food security, most notably through the “30 by 30” goal. Therefore, Singapore has to increase efficiency of land use, by producing more food per unit area and producing food at a faster rate. This is where I believe technology comes in to disrupt the farming business, through predictive analytics, farmers are able to optimise farming conditions according to accurate weather prediction to improve crop yield. Furthermore, with Urban Farming a huge initiative now, IoTs and cloud computing will allow urban farmers to monitor crops at multiple locations wherever they are.
