Why TSM South Korea?
What motivates you to join TSM?
TSM gathers like-minded people who are passionate or have experiences in start-ups, particular in the technology sector. This allows us to learn effectively from one another, and also for me to gain insights from everyone, be it from my peers, or the companies we visit.
A subsidised trip, having fun learning, being able to travel, gaining new insights. What can be better than that?
Why pick South Korea?
South Korea is among the world’s most technologically advanced and digitally-connected countries. Even traditional family operated small businesses that are usually resistant to change are slowly going digital, providing more advanced services. That explains a lot about the technological progress in South Korea, and definitely a place we can gain lots of insight from.
Internship Opportunities
What types of internship opportunities interest you?
Being a business analyst or IT consultant in fun and creative technology start-ups. I would also love to hone my skills in any other business roles, such as marketing, sales, strategic planning that will be allow me to gain valuable experiences and aid me in my future start up.
Starting a business
Types of business that interest me
Businesses that involves social media and are travel - related; are creative and manage to differentiate their product in an existing established industry.
What plan do you have in starting a business? (list existing business)
I have always been interested in starting up a business I call my own. However, it has always been “action and no talk”. Only in SMU, where they provide many opportunities to encourage students to be creative, venture out have I started making baby steps. Together with Lee Jin, we are currently taking part in the SMU innovation awards 2013, in hope to get funds for our business idea, TravelSmart. This travel-related application that we hope to launch in the future aims to aid people in their itinerary planning when travelling.

Past Experiences
To date, we have embarked on SAGE 2013 journey as mentors and splash award 2013 competition with our start-up ideas.
SAGESG
SAGESG is a competition for JC students to come together and develop business plans that directly address social needs through their services or products. As mentors, we have partake in trainings to learn more about the skills needed to start a business, such as business creation fundamentals, understanding business models using business model canvas, start up finances and developing partnerships and operational considerations. With the knowledge, we continue learning and guide JC teams to implement their social enterprise new start up ideas.
Both Lee Jin and I mentored 2 teams each, and through our teamwork and exchanging of skills, feedback and knowledge, 3 of our teams succeeded in making through to the SAGE finals, which features the top 5 JC teams out of 20.
SCSS splash awards 2013
Lee Jin and I took part in SCSS splash awards 2013 organised by The Singapore Computer Society Student Chapter with the support of InfoComm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). This year, Splash Awards focuses on innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship through the development of applications regarding the use of government data from data.gov.sg.
It required us to create an application that has to be ready for launch into the market.Even though we did not get through to the semi-final round, it was a great experience to learn that demand, practicality and feasibility are crucial factors for the success of a possible business.
