My most important takeaway from the trip was how obsessed the Germans were in their sustainability practices - everything from recycling used bottles (and getting an offset on your supermarket purchases when you do so), to the lack of plastic bags in almost all the supermarkets I visited, which is a shame that Singapore is still lagging in this area.

Why TSM Hong Kong?

What motivates you to join TSM?

  • Positive experience in my previous 2 overseas study missions to Malaysia and Germany - I want one more overseas experience before I graduate
  • Learn more about how technology startups (especially that of Shenzhen) work
  • Learn more about how various factors (political, environmental, etc) shape the technology scene of HK and China
  • Source for new ideas
  • Compare the startup and entrepreneurial scene of the various countries I have studied before

Why pick Hong Kong / Shenzhen?

  • Transport is one of the best in the world
  • Startups in Hong Kong and Shenzhen? I'm curious, tell me more!

Ideal role in the trip

  • Photographer (most preferred)
  • Social Media Manager / Journalist
  • Itinerary Planner

Starting a business

What types of business interest you?

  • Innovative Solutions using Tech
  • IoT

What plan do you have in starting a business?

Not in the near term, as I want to work for a startup first.

However, in future, I am considering to start a social enterprise that focuses on empowering the disadvantaged with basic technical skills such as basic programming skills. Upskilling these groups of people will enable them to be more industry relevant and ready, providing them with income that will help to reduce income inequality.

The inspiration came from a pitch I had to do during my Management Communication course, where I had to pitch to a group of prisoners the benefits of coding as part of my assessment. Coupled with the spirit of giving that is in me, I want to give back the skills we have to the community so that future generations can benefit from technology in an ethical way.

Past Experiences

Banff Cyber Technologies Pte Ltd

May 2017 - Jul 2017

I interned there as a Associate Web Frontend Engineer, where I was responsible for the creating their new web scanner product which was planned to be integrated with their core offering - WebOrion. During the process, I came up with wireframes of the planned product and integrated a third-party service which Banff Cyber was at that time collaborating together.

My workplace - at the JTC LaunchPad @ one-north - allowed for close-up interaction with other startups. In fact I enjoyed working there so much that I had made my mind to work for another startup, also in one-north, after graduation.

BSM Germany

Feb 2018 - Mar 2018

Organised by Prof. Thomas Menkhoff, I had the opportunity to visit Berlin - touted as the startup hub of Europe - in Feb 2018. I got the chance to visit Factory Berlin where we were introduced to, among other things, Berlin's startup ecosystem and their RadBahn project. We also visited the EUREF Campus where we saw startups dedicated to sustainability.

My most important takeaway from the trip was seeing how obsessed the Germans were in their sustainability practices - everything from recycling used bottles (and getting an offset on your supermarket purchases when you do so), to the lack of plastic bags in almost all the supermarkets I visited, which is a shame that Singapore is still lagging in this area.

What keeps you ticking?

Giving.

Being able to share with others your experiences and your know-how will help more people become greater, like avoiding the past mistakes we had done. So many books also talk about how you achieve success by giving. In the 2nd chapter of 'The Go-Giver', Pindar tells a struggling Joe that the secret to success is giving. It was with this spirit that I share as much as I know to others and volunteer where I can. Seeing people happy and successful after giving is what drives me to keep on giving.
