Welcome! This wiki page provides information specific to SMT application and research projects (from AY2022/23 Term 2 onwards only; AY2022/23 Term 1 students should refer to the SMT483 wiki).

SMT Project Types

IS483 - Smart-City Application Project IS485 - Smart-City Analytical/Research Project
Team Size 4-6 2-3
Objective and Scope
  • To design and implement a smart city application that incorporates a combination of technology enablers, and which addresses an urbanisation, sustainability, or societal challenge in domains such as housing, environment, etc.
  • (Analytical) To conduct an evidence-based analysis of smart city blueprint (locally or overseas) or analytical models addressing an urbanisation, sustainability, or societal challenge in different domains such as housing, environment, etc.
  • (Research) To conduct research based on an identified problem related to addressing a smart city challenge. The scope may include a new algorithm / approach, simulation, and/or analysis for urbanisation, sustainability, or societal challenge in different domains such as housing, environment, etc.
Recommended Skill-sets / Pre-requisites
  • You should have passed: IS111 Introduction to Programming, SMT203 Computational Social Science: Principles and Applications, IS112 Data Management
  • For the AY2022 SMT intake, IS212 Software Project Management is a co-requisite
  • Other highly recommended courses: Interaction Design & Prototyping, Web Application Development I & II, Internet of Things
  • Empirical Studies, Research Methods, Analytics Foundation, Geographic Information Systems, Sustainable (Digital) Cities, Introduction to Public Policy.
  • GPA of > 3.4
Project Sponsor
  • IS483 application projects require a sponsor. These can be self-sourced external sponsors from the private or public sector. The project can also be sponsored by a SCIS faculty.
  • A sponsor is optional for IS485 research projects. You can pose your own research problem, or choose to work on one suggested by an external party or SCIS faculty.
Project Supervisor
  • You do NOT need to identify a faculty supervisor for an IS483 project. We will assign your team to one.
  • You MUST identify a SCIS faculty who is willing to supervise the project. Please obtain their agreement and include their name in your proposal. Proposals without an agreed faculty supervisor will be rejected.

Multi-Track Application Projects

From AY2022/23 Term 2 onwards, SMT major students may form IS483 (application project) teams with students from an IS major track. Please take note of the following:

  • The IS major students in your team must all be from the same IS major track. For example, you can have an SMT+BA, SMT+DCS, or SMT+FT team, but NOT an SMT+DCS+FT team.
  • There must be at least two SMT major students in the team.
  • You must have at least two students from the chosen IS major track.
  • Your project must fulfil the requirements of SMT major projects AND those of the chosen IS major track. Please consult with the SMT Programme Director and relevant Track Coordinator early.

There is no strict upper word limit, but concise technical writing is preferred. (FYI: academic publications that use this format rarely exceed 10 pages excluding references/appendices!)
