The SROI concept is a novel way to measure non-financial transactions that occur between people and organisations. It quantifies work and effort put in by people who do not receive any monetary compensation for the work that they do. Volunteer work falls in nicely in this category, and any resource that is put in within the context of doing social good without a monetary reward tied to it.

Another reason is the measure of the efficiency of the utilised resources within the social work framework.

Many of the resources that are utilised may not be easily quantifiable, as there may not be a clear financial returns from the initial resource investment. In addition, these resources do not have a direct value allocated to it, unlike other resources that are used in a business context. Thus, a novel way of quantifying the resources used would be needed to measure whether a particular resource has been efficiently used.
