SMU Libraries Background

SMU Libraries – Lee Kong Shing Library and Kwa Geok Choo Law Library is located at the heart of SMU’s city campus, to support the research and learning needs of the SMU community. It facilitates knowledge creation primarily through its electronic search platform as well as access to a comprehensive range of research resources on and off campus.

The collections include:

  • Over 460,000 printed and electronic books
  • Access to over 80,000 print and electronic journals
  • More than 170 electronic databases
  • Over 22,000 SMU research publications
  • Oral History Collection

Other than that, SMU Libraries also provides a wide range of collaboration spaces including project rooms with LCD panels, learning labs, quiet areas, investment studio, graduate lounges, and Hive - an innovative space for collaborative learning. The library space is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as wireless network, digital signage, express workstations, videoconferencing and dedicated computers with specialised financial software.

Project Motivation

SMU Libraries have played an essential role for the SMU community learning needs. To live up to its mission of delivering exceptional services, SMU Libraries have conducted a survey to measure how the libraries are perceived by the SMU community.

The SMU Libraries survey will gauge the SMU community satisfaction with its facilities, services, collections and resources. It will identify the areas of improvement and address any needs and concerns.

It is important to gather the information to stay relevant to the SMU community learning needs.

Project Objectives

To understand the SMU community satisfaction rate with the Libraries, it is essential to create a visual summary of the myriad amount of information gathered from the survey. Rather than looking through thousands of rows on an Excel spreadsheet, data visualisation provides an easier way for SMU Libraries to identify any insights from the charts’ patterns and trends, simplifying communicating data findings and strive for improvements.

With the comprehensive dataset, the visualisation of this project will be on:

  • Identifying SMU Libraries key users by position and study area
  • SMU community library preference – Li Ka Shing or Kwa Geok Choo
  • Visits and library resources usage frequency
  • SMU Libraries’ services perceived importance and performance comparison
  • How overall satisfaction affect likelihood to recommend the SMU Libraries’ services to another student
  • Top comments mentioned filtered by overall satisfaction

The analysis will reveal the level of services provided by SMU libraries as perceived by:

  • Undergraduate students
  • Postgraduate students
  • Faculty
  • Staff
