PART 1: THEMATIC MAPPING

Distribution of Public Education Institution

As there are many schools in Singapore, to make sure that each symbol representing the category stands out, I used different shapes and colors of symbol for each category to better differentiate them and ensure that there is a contrasting difference with the background. Especially for the centralised institution which only has 1, I increased its size because it will be hidden by other symbols surrounding it.

Hierarchy of Singapore’s Road Network System

Lines makes the maps looks complicated. Hence I did not choose to use other patterned lines. Instead, I used different colored lines to specifically display Singapore’s road network system. The roads are categorised according to Singapore’s street suffixes. Because there are more local access roads and minor arterial/ primary access roads, I used lighter colors as compared to the other categories so that the other roads stands out as well.

2014 Master Plan LandUse

The 2014 Master Plan Landuse composes of several categories. Therefore, I used a gradient color for the categories and selectively customised color for a few categories such as agriculture, park, cemetery and road. For the rest of the categories, as they take up a greater amount of space (e.g. business, residential) they are split into another category of color (e.g. red, blue) but differentiated through different shades of the same color.

Aged Population (+65) in 2010 and 2018

Missing Values are replaced from NULL to 0, and the values of the aged population for each year are derived from the sum of aged population within a subzone.

Proportional of Aged Population in 2010 and 2018

The proportion of aged population within each subzone to the total amount of population are derived from the division of aged population to the total amount of population.

Percentage Change of Aged Population between 2010 and 2018

The percentage change in aged population between 2010 and 2018 are derived by deducting subzone population in 2010 from subzone population in 2018 and divided by subzone population in 2010. As seen from the map, ageing population has risen between 2010 to 2018.
