Initially, we were stumped by the task to select a planning area for our project. Wanting to choose somewhere close to our hearts, we considered the 3 residential areas that we are staying in.
Eventually, through pure coincidence, we settled on Tampines - a location where we all shared fond childhood memories. For Candy, she spent her weekends travelling to IKEA, Giant, Courts in Tampines with her family. Looking back, her memories of Tampines were related to the times with her family - the happy moments she had in the stores, going through every aisle and picking out groceries or furniture. For Genice, she has lived in the East for her entire life and Tampines was often the place that she hangs out with her friends or have her family meals. She witnessed the construction of Our Tampines Hub and the building of the Tampines East and West MRTs. She holds Tampines dearly to her heart. For Bai He, Tampines was packed with suburban shopping malls like Tampines Mall, Tampines 1 and Century Square. They offer a varied and exciting mix of shopping, dining and entertainment options, which attracted her family to frequently shop and dine at Tampines over the weekends, as it was convenient to travel down from the Northeast area. Hence, this project is special to us – from our childhood experiences, we have conjured up different images of Tampines. We are excited to see how it has changed as we study the urban development and transformation of Tampines over the years, and even carry out future planning for Tampines.
