Chosen Area of Study
Punggol
As part of the efforts to transform Singapore into a Smart City, there has been extensive planning to develop Punggol into a town where cutting-edge technologies are created. Dubbed the ‘Silicon Valley’ of Singapore, Punggol Digital District is envisioned to facilitate close collaboration between academia and industry. Beyond its economic attractiveness, the integrated master plan of 2014 also aims to build a high quality living environment with enhanced transport connectivity and community spaces to change the way people live, work and play. With this vision, we can expect to see numerous changes in the land use functions of Punggol. Hence, we find it crucial to examine the land use changes given that this area will be a key part of Singapore’s Smart City development.
Project Objectives
Part 1
- Identify the key changes in the land use in Punggol by comparing and contrasting Master Plan 2008 and Master Plan 2014 data.
Part 2
- Examine the changes in population demographics in Punggol, by segmenting the population into the following: Young Persons (Aged 0-25), Economically Active Persons (EAP) (Aged 26-64), and the Aged (Aged 65 and above).
- Investigate whether the Master Plan provides sufficient facilities and infrastructure for each segmented age group.
- Identify the unique characteristics of the Punggol Digital District and its influences on the population demographics of the planning area to carry out further thorough analysis targeted to the specific demographic segment that accounts for the highest proportion of the population.
Part 3
- Make recommendations on the land use based on the findings in Part 2.
- Suggest feasible and significant facilities needed to enhance the lives of Punggol residents.
