VAST Challenge 2018: Suspense at the Wildlife Preserve

The finding is presented in Tableau's Dashboard [1]

Objectives Review

3 major focuses of the study

  • Characterize the past and most recent situation with respect to chemical contamination in the Boonsong Lekagul waterways.
  • Any anomalies from the dataset? How does it affect the analysis?
  • Would any of the finders cause particular concern for the Pipit or other wildlife.

The exercise started by analyzing the historical trend for all locations and all chemicals in the last 20 years. As the data analysis proceeded, the focus was gradually narrowed down to what matters - is there any evidence contamination. At the end, the investigation narrowed down to 3 chemicals (Anionic active surfactants, Chemical Oxygen Demand(Cr), and Methylosmoline) for the Kohsoom area, which happen to be the closest sampling point to the dump waste. From the chart below, it is evident that these 3 chemical experienced substantial increase after 2010, as compared to its historical levels.

It is likely that Kohsoom may have been contaminated by dump waste, with the evidence of the elevated readings for the 3 chemicals. The findings could however be insufficient for evidence establishment purpose. There is no evidence whether the upward trend was an independent event, e.g. natural change of the water; neither is there any evidence that the dump waste had any correlation for these 3 chemicals. Subject experts will need to be brought in to

  • validate the scientific factors behind the trend, e.g. due to inherenent change, or due to external impact
  • validate if the dump waste has any scientific relationship with the 3 chemicals.
