The recent financial information leaks by offshore law firms and corporate service providers, Mossack Fonseca and Appleby, have revealed the secretive nature of offshore tax-havens, exposing some of the wealthiest and most influential people in the world, mostly in the West. This research paper investigates offshore investments by entities and individuals based in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region and its implications. This is achieved through extensive data exploration and visualization based on data provided by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). Integral to the findings of this paper is the network model visualization developed by our team, revealing relationships between individuals, intermediaries and entities. This research paper has uncovered differing offshore investment strategies adopted individuals and entities of different countries within the APAC region, notably Singapore and Hong Kong.

Abstract

The recent financial information leaks by offshore law firms and corporate service providers, Mossack Fonseca and Appleby, have revealed the secretive nature of offshore tax-havens, exposing some of the wealthiest and most influential people in the world, mostly in the West. This research paper investigates offshore investments by entities and individuals based in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region and its implications. This is achieved through extensive data exploration and visualization based on data provided by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Integral to the findings of this paper is the network model visualization developed by our team, revealing relationships between individuals, intermediaries and entities. This research paper has uncovered differing offshore investment strategies adopted individuals and entities of different countries in the APAC region, notably Singapore and Hong Kong.
