"Question 1: Daily patterns"

The 'Patterns of Daily Life' analyses identifying the repeating patterns by individuals or groups on a daily basis.

1. Peak hours for the park by Gate type

From Figure1, we can see that 6AM to 6PM is the peak hour in the park. General gates, ranger stops, entrances and gates have activity throughout 24 hours of the day. While, activity at Camping site resumes at 5AM and continues until 12PM and at Ranger base, the vehicle movement is stopped during 3AM until 6PM.

2. Peak Hours by Car type

  • The park is mainly active from 6AM until 5PM on all days. It is mainly active for the vehicles: 2 Axle cars or motorcycles, 2 Axle and 3 Axle trucks. Though Park vehicle's activity starts from 6AM, it is most active only from 11AM till 5PM.
  • Though the number of 2 Axle cars or motorcycles decreases by 7PM, there is sudden rise at 10PM decreasing to the lowest by midnight
  • 2 Axle cars or motorcycles is the most frequent to the park followed by 2 Axle trucks and 3 Axle trucks and Park vehicles and the less frequent vehicles would be the 2 Axle and 3 Axle buses and 4 Axle trucks.

3. Vehicle Activities

The park vehicles have specific operation timings for different days of the week. The non – operation timings are:

Weekdays Timings
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 2AM - 6AM
Thursday, Friday, Sunday 3AM - 6AM
Saturday 1AM - 6AM

The 3 Axle bus does not operate on particular timings on 2 days:

Weekdays Timings
Sundays 8AM - 10AM
Tuesdays 4PM - 6PM

4. Camping site

Camping sites are accessed by 2 axle cars, 2 axle and 3 axle trucks and park vehicles alone. 2 axle and 3 axle buses and 4 axle and above trucks are not allowed to enter the camping sites. All camping sites are active from 5 AM till 10PM for 2 axle cars, 2 axle and 3 axle trucks. Generally, the camping sites are active from 5AM to 10PM but camping4 alone is active after 10PM until 1AM.

5. Park vehicles

Camping sites are the least accessed and Gates are the most accessed by park vehicles. They have access to all gates except Entrance gates as they never leave the park. The park vehicles are not active from 4 AM until 6AM. The ranger base is accessed at all times and so it could be a parking place for park vehicles or the rangers are patrolling throughout the night. There is an unusual access in general gate0 and camping 1 by park vehicles.

6. Most accessed path

The general – gate 7 has the highest activity from 2 Axle cars (or motorcycle). The most accessed path by vehicles is: General-gate1 -> ranger-stop2 -> ranger-stop0 -> general-gate2 (figure )

"Question 2: Long term patterns"

The 'Patterns of Long period' analyses depend on recognizing repeating patterns of activities by individuals or groups over a longer period (multiple days).

1. Peak periods of Park

The park is highly active in the months from May till October having a maximum vehicle count of around 17,184 entries and the lowest being 138 entries. The park activity is highest in the month of July and the gates with the maximum activity (that is vehicle count):
Gate type Count
General Gates 17,184
Ranger Stops Ranger-stop0 Ranger-stop1
Entrance 7595
Camping 5962
Gate 566
138

Activities in Gates and Ranger base for all months are almost close to each other and has the lowest activity of all gate types.

2. Vehicles in peak and off-peak periods

2 axle cars, 2 axle trucks and 3 axle trucks have a sudden increase in activity from May’15 till Oct’15 as this is considered as the peak season. While activities of Park vehicles, 4 axle (and above) truck, 2 axle bus and 3 axle bus stay the same. On further analysis, we can see that 4 axle trucks, 3 and 4 axle buses have similar activities. While for park vehicles, there is a sudden drop in activity after May’15 and is almost stable throughout the year with few rises and drops after Jan’16.

"Question 3: Unusual patterns"

Analysis to find out patterns that differs from the ones that are already observed or anomalies.

1. Unusual activities at gates

  • 4 axle truck visited the ranger-stop3 and ranger-stop6 at the same time 23 times via gate3 and gate5 and gate6 respectively
  • The ranger-stop1 was accessed six times by 2 Axle cars (or motorcycles) on the whole but these vehicles were not recorded at Gate2, which is the only way to get to ranger-stop1.
  • General-gate0 was accessed twice by Park vehicles. Could be for any special VIP passes
  • 2 axle cars have 2 extra timestamps at general-gate 6 after camping at camping7
  • 1 park vehicle went back to ranger-stop7 without using gate7 or it could have went back due to some reasons

2. 4 Axle truck at Gates

  • The 4 axle trucks enter the 'Gates': gate3 - gate5 - gate6 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • This truck could enter these gates in order to make a stop or deliver something at Ranger stops '0, 2, 3 and 6'
  • On other days like Monday, Friday and Saturday, the truck follows the same route as in the image. Except for Sundays, it does not pass through the General gate5. Maybe it is closed on Sundays.
  • On all days except Wednesday the truck is active at Ranger stops at any time of day, but on Wednesday, the truck does not move through Ranger stops for from 1AM - 3AM

3. Unusual access by 2 Axle car at Ranger stops

Ranger stop1 which is restricted to Park vehicles is accessed by six 2 axle cars (or motorcycles) on 10th of July. From the timestamp it is clearly a group visit by the 6 vehicles and they are in the park to visit Ranger stop1 alone. They enter via entrance1 and go straight to ranger stop1 and finally leave via entrance1.

3. 2 axle car that stayed in Park

The 2 axle car ‘20155705025759-63’ entered the park via Entrance 0 on June 5 ’15 and never left the park. His last activity was recorded on May 20, 2016 in Camping 5. The car keeps moving once or twice every month and every time he moves only to visit a camping site and he uses the same gates as can be seen in the figure. He could be switching from different camping groups and continues to stay in the park. He visited all camping sites except Camping 7 and camping 8

4. Camping site 4

On further analysis on camping site4, it is found that 2 Axle trucks access the site:

  • on Sundays from 10PM until 11PM
  • on Mondays from 12AM until 1AM
