Task Requirement
Identify those IDs that stand out for their large volumes of communication. For each of these IDs
1. Characterize the communication patterns you see.
2. Based on these patterns, what do you hypothesize about these IDs?
Note: Please limit your response to no more than 4 images and 300 words.
IDs with large Communication Volume
As shown in Figure 1, most visitors had sent and received messages in the range of 0 to 200 text messages. There are a groups of visitors had more than 3000 of the communication volume. The three significant IDs that stand out with large communication volume are 1278894, 839736 and External, they had the communication volume (in terms of messages sent & received) of more than 60,000.
Next, we will examine each of these IDs with a more detailed analysis.
About ID 1278894
Findings
Number of Messages Sent & received
- The number of messages sent and received by this ID has a consistent trend over the same day at regular hours. Largest communication volume observed on Sunday, followed by Sat, and least volume on Friday.
- The messages sent by 1278894 appeared in only five periodic hours a day: 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00 (See Chart 1).
Communication between 1278894 and other visitors
- The communication patterns between 1278894 and its receiver IDs also appeared to be in regular and consistent manner happened in same 5 hours as in Chart 1.
- In Chart 2, for each day, on 2 hourly basis at 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, and 8pm, the median messages sent by 1278894 to each visitor is about 10 to 12 text messages.
- In Chart 3, the maximum number of messages sent to individual Receiver Id over 3 days is 172 to 178.
Location of 1278894
- Most of the messages were sent out at Entry Corridor by 1278894.
To sum up, periodicity is the most important feature observed for ID 1278894. ID 1278894 sends and receives messages to multiple park visitors. From the figure above, this ID sent messages, and others IDs responded, at regular intervals at 12noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm. Then the communication pattern ceased for an interval.
Since its location is at Entry Corridor, this ID could be a park service ID which broadcasted periodical information service, and sent information related to some interactive games between the park services and other visitors.
About ID 839736
Findings
The communications between 839736 and any visitor always run back and forth. This is a common feature for both 839736 and 1278894, but 1278894 sent texts to visitors first and then received from same visitors’ replies.
Number of Messages Sent & received
ID 839736 communicates with messages to several different park visitors throughout the day at no fixed interval. However, there was a high communication spike happened on Sunday (8 June) about noon time. We will further investigate this abnormal pattern in Task 2.
Communication between 839736 and other visitors
From the visual analysis in above figure, the top 5 receivers from sender 839736 are 1149884, 1601276, 1217381, 1711922 and 1092525. All of these receiver Ids received high volume of messages from 839736 on Sunday between 12 noon and 1pm.
Further analysis revealed that all these receivers' location were at Creighton Pavilion, and all of them (except 1601276) had received texts from ID 839736 only over the 3 days. Thus, we could hypothesize that these top receivers were probably the park staff working at Pavilion, and the 839736 pattern could also be some form of park management / help desk near Entrance Corridor, this ID provides update / information to all other park visitors.
About Receiver External
Findings
ID External means the communications between visitors inside the park and outside the park. It’s observed that there was a spike in large communication happening between visitors to external on Sunday around 11am. People inside usually like to share the information about the activities or unexpected events. So the time when the external receives large messages might infer the stage show time or vandalism.
