ABSTRACT

We have the data about Survey of faculty members from one Spanish university on teaching uses of Wikipedia. According to the data, we can get the answers for the series questions about how can Wikipedia help students and what areas are mostly need Wikipedia. in this page, some data visualization methods will be included in order to show the result clearly.Though the analysis, we have some interesting findings:

  1. In the Arts&Humanities majors, Wikipedia has quite usefulness and professional explanations for some terms.
  2. In the Law&Politics areas, Wikipedia is hard to give the satisfied answers according to the survey.

Motivation and Problems

Recently, more and more teachers are considering about using Wikipedia as a kind of teaching tool. In addition, many famous Proof will join the Wikipedia edition work. So for most school, teachers maybe no need to waste time on the class knowledge preparation. students can increase their knowledge by viewing the Wikipedia. It is quite useful to search some terms in Wikipedia. but now, schools and teachers are worried about the professional degree of the Wikipedia, at the same time, Wikipedia can see which aspects it needs to improve according to the survey.

  1. How majors impact people in Wiki work in students&teachers' usefulness?
  2. Which aspects Wikipedia needs to improve?

Approach

The data was obtained from https://archive.ics.uci.edu/ml/datasets/wiki4HE in the last part, the data dictionary is given so every detail can been seen in the last. The Treemap and histogram are used in this page.

Interactive Data Visualization

Here is the link of my Tableau public: https://public.tableau.com/profile/zhangjinchuan#!/vizhome/assignment2_36/Story that allow you view the story and explore the result.

Tools Utilized

In this page, these tools are used:

  • Tableau 10.0
  • JMP Pro

Data Preparation

Data cleanning
After input the Csv file into JMP, we can find some data are lost, in this case, we just exclude them so we can see the result more clearly. we only choose the UOC, so excluded all the UPF data. in addition, we do not need OTHERS and OTHERS POSITION since they give uncompleted information.
Label change
Since the raw data file used number represent the different meanings, so we need to change the label back so that we can read easily in the treemap. by using RECODE function in JMP, we replaced the numbers in the raw data.

Data analysis

After finishing the data preparation, input the data into the Tableau, so that we can do the analysis work.
data distribution
first, we can use Histogram to see the distribution of the people who get the survey. we can find that the male is more than female, and mostly, they are not member of wiki. as for the age and work-experience year, they can be said quite young.

How domains impact people in Wiki work in student&teacher field
we can clearly find in the Engineer industry, people considered wiki as a strong tool when they teach their students. we can see this also from Behavior intentions. on the other hand, the Law&Political is the lowest area.As for the reasons, first of all, subjects like Engineer and sciences ( which is the second highest) usually have standard answers, so Wiki can give students what they want, and teachers can treat it as a tool to help students, but the situation is quite different in Law & Political field. students will easily get misunderstand when they view Wikipedia since people all over the world can give the answers, may the answers are not suitable for students regionally.

Treemap
From the first treemap about the Wiki Quality, we can see the Arts& Humanities field people give the highest score in this question. according to the experience, because of the good answers and explanations on wiki in this field are really perfect, so that teachers think if students view them, they will benefit a lot.
From the second treemap about the usefulness of Wikipedia, mostly high score are given by the Arts& Humanities and Sciences areas. so Wiki may should pay more attentions to the other three majors, since the scores of others are not so high, which means, people are not satisfied with wiki.

conclusion

Basically for the two questions, we can get the answers from the analyse.

  1. In the science and engineering, also including arts&Humanities, students can find lots of good explanations from the Wikipedia. In addition, teachers can get lots of help from Wikipedia, that could be a powerful tool for the teaching. on the other side, the Law&political is not so good, teachers would not use Wikipedia as an useful tool and would not suggest students view Wikipedia may worry about there could be some errors on it.
  2. As for Wikipedia, it may need to improve it performance in Law&political, considered about the regional maybe useful in the improve it, in other words, set different parts by the different regional is a good way to increase the right rate of explanations for this area.
