Compiled Problems(Web)

Severity 4: Usability catastrophe(0)

Severity 3: Major usability problem(2)

Problem 1

Name Unable to find the correct locker clusters
Heuristic 1. Visibility of system status Severity 3 = Major usability problem
Description:

Users do not know where the exact lockers clusters are on the map. It is confusing to try and deduce which colors stand for locker and which stands for corridors.

Proposed Solution:

Make use of a legend to indicate the color that represents locker for better visibility.

Problem 2

Name Unable to identify the maps with their respective school as there are no labels or names for each map
Heuristic 1. Visibility of system status Severity 3 = Major usability problem
Description:

Users will not know which school the map of lockers belongs too since there is no obvious greying out or labelling of the school name and cluster.

Proposed Solution:

Provide a header at the top of the map to indicate the school, at the same time grey out those schools that are not chosen.

Severity 2: Minor usability problem

Problem 3

Name Too much white space on page
Heuristic 1. Visibility of system status Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

Users will be shown a blank page with school name and level when they want to book new lockers.

Proposed Solution:

Prompt users to select school and level in searchLocker.jsp rather than giving them a blank page to figure out. Alternatively, grey out the areas that users are not supposed to press on so that they'll have a better idea of what they are supposed to do first.

Problem 4

Name Lack of explanation for the numbers that are shown after the admin choose to view lockers from a certain school
Heuristic 5. Error prevention Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

After admin chooses the school and level in admin locker management, they are simply shown a bunch of numbers which does not explain their purpose.

Proposed Solution:

Those numbers are supposedly the number of unbooked lockers in each floor for that particular school, but it might be slightly confusing as to what admin are supposed to do with it. Provide an alert to indicate the actions that are supposed to be carried out.

Problem 5

Name Able to access the book locker page even after students own a locker
Heuristic 3. User control and freedom Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

User will still be able to go to the booking page after booking a locker which might be confusing as they will think that they can book more than one locker.

Proposed Solution:

Grey out the booking page when users own a locker, or have a warning message on that page when they are trying to book again.

Problem 6

Name Users/Admin have to memorize the different locations lockers are at
Heuristic 6. Recognition rather than recall Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

Currently, users/admin will have to memorize how the clusters look in real life when they search(for admin)/view(for both) for lockers.

Proposed Solution:

Have a picture to indicate where the actual lockers are at. Provide a mini-map that will be available via pop-up when users toggle for that option.

Problem 7

Name User have to hover over multiple blocks to determine which lockers are booked
Heuristic 7. Flexibility and efficiency of use Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

User will have to hover over the different lockers within the cluster to check which are booked.

Proposed Solution:

Use color codes for booked lockers; red for booked lockers and white for those that are unbooked.

Problem 8

Name Area indicating locker cluster on map is too small
Heuristic 7. Flexibility and efficiency of use Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

The area indicating locker cluster on the map is currently too small, and it is slightly annoying since users have to hover over the exact spot.

Proposed Solution:

Make the area indicating locker cluster bigger, and enlarge the map so that users will not have to squint to use the map.

Problem 9

Name Complaints are separated into too many little boxes
Heuristic 8. Aesthetic and minimalist design Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

All the complaints are currently put in little boxes, and it can look a bit excessive since they are all in one page. User feels that they have to scroll through too much information before they can get the one they need.

Proposed Solution:

Consider representing the data in rows instead. In this way, it will not take up too much space, and it might also look neater. Have a search filter so that vendor can find what they are looking for easily.

Problem 10

Name Lack of system messages
Heuristic 9. Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

No success or error messages provided when users finish a task.

Proposed Solution:

Have an alert to indicate status once users complete an action.

Problem 11

Name Lack of instructions
Heuristic 10. Help and documentation Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

Users are not given any instruction on how to kick-start the booking process and it might be slightly confusing since it’s a brand new system.

Proposed Solution:

Provide a tutorial on how to use the different functionalities. Can grey out the areas that are not relevant to current step, and guide them.

Problem 12

Name Lack of instructions for admin
Heuristic 10. Help and documentation Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

Admin are directed to a blank page with dropdown boxes after they login. It looks pretty bad, and off-putting since they might not know what the page is about.

Proposed Solution:

Explain the page and give clearer instruction on the steps to take.

Severity 1: Cosmetic problem only

Problem 13

Name Misleading buttons on admin page
Heuristic 2. Match between system and the real world Severity 1 = Cosmetic problem only
Description:

The plus button in admin locker management is confusing as user will think that they are allowed to add new lockers when pressing on any locker. Instead the button is for user to edit locker details.

Proposed Solution:

Change the plus button to an edit button instead.

Problem 14

Name Misleading buttons on student locker details page
Heuristic 2. Match between system and the real world Severity 1 = Cosmetic problem only
Description:

The report broken locker button is confusing as the symbol used is normally used as a settings button.

Proposed Solution:

Change the report locker button to a warning button as suggested by some of the testers.

Problem 15

Name No standardization for colors on the map
Heuristic 4. Consistency and standards Severity 1 = Cosmetic problem only
Description:

Different colors are used for locker cluster for different schools and it makes it difficult for users to know what is what.

Proposed Solution:

Use yellow to represent all the locker clusters in the different schools.

Problem 16

Name No standardization for colors on the map
Heuristic 5. Error prevention Severity 1 = Cosmetic problem only
Description:

Different colors are used for locker cluster for different schools and it makes it difficult for users to know what is what.

Proposed Solution:

Use yellow to represent all the locker clusters in the different schools.

Severity 0: I don't agree that this is a usability problem

Problem 17

Name Lack of filtering when admin view lockers
Heuristic 3. User control and freedom Severity 0 = I don't agree that this is a usability problem
Description:

Vendor and admin are unable to filter the search for locker other than by school, cluster or level. Should allow them to choose the kind of locker status they are interested in too, if not they will have to comb through tons of lockers just to find the correct information.

Proposed Solution:

Create a button that allows admin/vendor to filter for the locker status they are interested in.

Reasons for not implementing:

Admin will actually be able to see all the faulty lockers when they visit the vendor page, so it will be redundant to display the same information in two different pages..

Compiled Problems(Phone)

Severity 4: Usability catastrophe

Severity 3: Major usability problem(5)

Problem 1

Name Lack of log out button
Heuristic 3. User control and freedom Severity 3 = Major usability problem
Description:

There is no log out button for the user to exit the app once they are done booking. This can cause their account to get compromised in the event that they lose their phone.

Proposed Solution:

Create a log out button.

Problem 2

Name User doesn't know their locker combination code
Heuristic 11. Not related to any heuristics Severity 3 = Major usability problem
Description:

Students will not know what their combination codes are since it is not reflected on the system.

Proposed Solution:

A combination code is now provided so that users will know what codes are they supposed to use.

Problem 3

Name Inappropriate error message
Heuristic 11. Not related to any heuristics Severity 3 = Major usability problem
Description:

When users try to choose lockers they are shown error message first before the locker information page is shown.

Proposed Solution:

The error message will be removed so that user will be directed to the locker information page immediately.

Problem 4

Name Inappropriate redirection and labelling of objects
Heuristic 11. Not related to any heuristics Severity 3 = Major usability problem
Description:

Users are redirected to another page after they try to view all lockers leaving them confused as to what they are supposed to. Furthermore, there is no proper labelling for locker id, leaving it as a string of words.

Proposed Solution:

Users will be notified that they are viewing all the details of the locker in the redirected page, and also proper naming conventions will be given to the locker ids so that they will not be confused trying to decipher the exact meaning of those words.

Problem 5

Name Inappropriate naming for booking status
Heuristic 11. Not related to any heuristics Severity 3 = Major usability problem
Description:

Users are unable to understand what status 1 mean under locker bookings.

Proposed Solution:

This is an oversight on the coders part, it will be changed to reflect the payment status.

Severity 2: Minor usability problem(6)

Problem 6

Name Didn't state the end date for locker lease
Heuristic 1. Visibility of system status Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

Currently, users are not reminded when their lease is ending which makes it difficult for them to track when they need to clear their lockers.

Proposed Solution:

Add lease duration information on the page.

Problem 7

Name Textbox for inputting complaints is too small
Heuristic 3. User control and freedom Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

Users have difficult inputting their complaints as the textbox is an input field in the complaints page.

Proposed Solution:

A new text box is added to allow users to input their complaints.

Problem 8

Name No image indicating location of booked locker
Heuristic 6. Recognition rather than recall Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

Users have to refer to the maps that are in searchLocker.jsp or rely on their memory to remember the location of their booked locker.

Proposed Solution:

Provide a mini-map that students can press on so that they will be able to identify their locker location.

Problem 9

Name Locker id is not auto-populated
Heuristic 7. Flexibility and efficiency of use Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

The locker id is not auto populated now resulting in the user having to key in their locker id.

Proposed Solution:

Ensure that the locker id will be auto-filled for all relevant fields whenever users access the different pages.

Problem 10

Name Have to create a new account to book lockers
Heuristic 7. Flexibility and efficiency of use Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

User is unable to use single sign on as a log in method right now and the need to create a new account to book lockers is troublesome.

Proposed Solution:

Currently waiting for OSL to get back to us regarding the SSO, and if our team is not granted access, there is a high chance of us needing users to create a new account.

Problem 11

Name No reminders for the end of locker lease
Heuristic 11. Not related to any heuristics Severity 2 = Minor usability problem
Description:

Send a message to remind users when their bookings are going to end so that they will know when they have to clear their lockers.

Proposed Solution:

Implement a SMS system for it or alternatively, make use of emails to remind students on the lease period.

Severity 1: Cosmetic problem only(4)

Problem 12

Name Inappropriate color for text font
Heuristic 8. Aesthetic and minimalist design Severity 1 = Cosmetic problem only
Description:

Having green color for text font makes it difficult to read.

Proposed Solution:

Change the color to something that is more reader friendly.

Problem 13

Name Overlapping images and text
Heuristic 8. Aesthetic and minimalist design Severity 1 = Cosmetic problem only
Description:

The text will overlap with the image when a complaint is being input.

Proposed Solution:

The image will be moved further downwards based on the length of the text so that it does not affect the alignment.

Problem 14

Name Font size is too small
Heuristic 8. Aesthetic and minimalist design Severity 1 = Cosmetic problem only
Description:

The fonts for view booking are too small causing too much redundant space in the page.

Proposed Solution:

Increase the size of the text is bigger now so that reading will be easier and there will be less white space in the page.

Problem 15

Name Redundant white spaces
Heuristic 8. Aesthetic and minimalist design Severity 1 = Cosmetic problem only
Description:

There are redundant white spaces at the bottom of the page in the Make Complaints page for Android app.

Proposed Solution:

Our team does not think that this is a problem as the white space will be filled with text/images that the users input when making their complaints.

Severity 0: I don't agree that this is a usability problem
