Project Progress Summary

Between iteration 4 and iteration 5, the team felt that it was necessary to conduct an open minded process of ideation and project re-scoping to consider other functionalities and options in collecting data from the volunteers, as during our first Supervisor Meeting with Professor Benjamin Gan, we realized that the team might be in a situation of “functional fixation”.

After research of the problem statement brought forth by the sponsor and interviews with the volunteers, the team went through the ideation phase and came up with 16 different ideas to tackle the issues (as documented here). Finally, we finalized on two key ideas to be addressed for the project:

  • Adopt IoT (Internet of Things) as main form of data collection tool to collect data, primarily using Raspberry Pi
  • Obstacle reporting module to provide further wheelchair accessibility information for users

Project Highlights

There were a few changes throughout the project so far, and they include:

  • Change of Raspberry Pi mounting case, from 3D printed cases to plastic containers
  • Delayed in procurement of IoT devices, which led to delay in data collection
  • Added new modules like GPS processing module to provide more focus on GPS accuracy, which is the main value addition to Sponsor
  • The way we upload data onto database has changed, from uploading directly to using REST web service via POST.

Testing

Afer Acceptance, we conducted User Test (UT) 2 and 3 for testing of our system. A summary snapshot is listed below:
UT 2

  • Time Period: 13th - 27th September
  • Total Number of users: 7
  • Venue: Handicap Welfare Association (HWA), Volunteers' homes
  • Duration: 30 mins per user

UT 3

  • Time Period: 27th September
  • Total Number of users: 6
  • Venue: Handicap Welfare Association (HWA), Enabling village
  • Duration: 30 - 40 mins per userr

Please refer to the link on User Testing for more information on UT 2 and 3 details and findings.
