Project Description

In Singapore, most smokers started picking up smoking at a young age which tends to lead to smoking addiction. Moreover, most of those young smokers started out way before they are legal to smoke (a third started smoking at 14 years old or younger). Despite the installation of CCTV cameras and identity card checks conducted by shop attendants, underage smoking still has not been eradicated. Ministry of Health’s upcoming plans to raise the minimum legal smoking age from 18 years old to 21 years old by 2021, could potentially result in more underage smokers and illegal purchase of cigarettes. While there is no absolute method for preventing underage smoking, our team aims to implement measures to reduce the likelihood of it by identifying the convenience stores nearby neighborhood schools (a common area for teenagers) that are in high risk of selling of cigarettes that could likely end up in teenagers' hand.
