Task 1 Insights: Spatio-temporal Analysis of Official Air Quality
Importing Data
There are 6 official stations in Sofia to monitor air quality from 2013 to 2018, the data captured were stored in 28 csv files. Also, there is a metadata file to provide more information about the stations. First, I import all 28 csv files and concatenate them into a whole data set in Tableau. Then I import metadata file to inner join with this large data set. Now the final data set contains all information the official stations provide.
Insights
I use longitude and latitude to specify the location of these 6 stations.
This map is to show the locations of official stations in Sofia. There are 6 official stations to monitor air quality in Sofia city by capturing PM10 concentration. The stations' names are Druzhba, Hipodruma, IAOS/Pavlovo, Mladost, Nadezhda and Orlov Most. These 6 stations are close to each other, and all placed in the central part of Sofia.
Then I would like to know the operation duration of these 6 stations. This graph is to show the operating time duration of stations. In this dataset, these 6 official stations are capturing PM10 concentration from 2013/01/01 to 2018/09/14. But during 2017/01/01 to 2017/11/28, all 6 stations are not operating. Besides, Mladost only operates in 2018. Orlov Most only operates from 2013/01/01 to 2015/10/01. And during 2013 to 2016, stations are capturing PM10 per day, but during 2017 to 2018, they are capturing PM10 per hour.
After knowing the basic information about the 6 stations. This graph is to show the month average PM10 value from 2013 to 2018 of 6 stations. From this graph, it's very easy to find out that during a year, summer has the best air quality, winter has the worst air quality. Also, there is not very apparent trend among years, hard to detect whether overall year air quality in Sofia is becoming better or worse from 2013 to 2018.
But from this graph, PM10 are very high and reach a peak in December or January during 2013 to 2016. But recently, during 2017 to 2018, PM10 are not very high in December and January.
This graph is to show the hour value of PM10 among 6 stations, we can more easily to compare the PM10 value among 6 stations. Most of the time, 6 stations have very close PM10 values, it means all parts in Sofia have very consistent air quality. But at some point, for example, 2018/01/28 1AM, 2018/01/28 2AM and 2018/01/08 11PM, Hipodruma station have much larger PM10 compared to other stations. Considering in previous periods, Sofia usually have very close air quality around the city, so I consider this inconsistency as anomalies, which indicate the malfunction in Hipodruma in January 2018.
This graph is to show a typical day of Sofia. We can find out that from 9 to 17, PM10 usually is low. But from 18 to 24, PM10 usually is high, and reach peak at 24.
This map is to show the monthly average PM10 among 6 stations, the color of the dot is the PM10 value. From this map, we can find out that the air quality in Sofia is quite consistent in different parts, and in winter Sofia has worst air quality, in summer, Sofia has the best air quality.
