Overview

A major metropolitan area, Smartpolis is currently being invaded by an illness that is turning into an epidemic disease. City officials fear a possible epidemic and are mobilizing emergency management resources to mitigate the impact. There are three available data, the first one contains microblog messages collected from various devices with GPS capabilities. The second one contains map information for the entire metropolitan area. The map dataset contains a satellite image with labeled highways, hospitals, important landmarks, and water bodies. The last one information about population statistics and observed weather data. Use these data to help city officials to know about the illness and control it.

Task

Origin and Epidemic Spread

  1. Identify approximately where the outbreak started on the map (ground zero location).
  2. Outline the affected area.
  3. Explain how you arrived at your conclusion.

Epidemic Spread

  1. Present a hypothesis on how the infection is being transmitted. Identify the trends that support your hypothesis.
  2. Is the outbreak contained? Is it necessary for emergency management personnel to deploy treatment resources outside the affected area?

Challenge

Microblogs

the microblogs are massive, besides, not all of them are connected to the illness. So the challenge is how to get the useful microblogs. What's more, how to get the target people through the microblogs.
